In Losing Role

Aaron hit four for five as the :

Sounds like a great night, ,
doesn't it?
It wasn’t.
Unfortunately, Aaron’s hits '
all were singles and the Braves’
11 - hit attack produced only 1

Ribock Powers South
To 96-91 Victory
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPl)—The
South, powered by three play
ers who scored 62 points be
tween them, defeated the North
96-91 Wednesday night in the
annual Georgia High School All-
Star basketball game.
Stealing the show in the
South’s victory were Tommy
Bond of Savannah High, Eu
gene Brown of Beach High, Sa
vannah, and Johnoßibock of
Aquinas, Augusta.
“Big John" Ribock led the
game scoring with 28 markers.
Tonight, the North and South
football All-Stars tangle at Me
morial Stadium.
The basketball contest, played
before a capcity crowd of over
2,000 at the Savannah Sports
Center, started slowly with the
South, coached by Ray Williams
of Statesboro, leading in the
first quarter 11-7. At the half
the South led 41-32.
Ribock proved to be the key
factor in the first half. The 6-7
center pulled out 14 rebounds
and finished the half with 14
points.
Coach Emmett Wright’s North
squad started off on low key
and most of their shots failed
to hit.
The tempo picked up in the
third quarter as both teams be
gan to hit with more frequency.
OUT OF ACTION
NEW YORK (UPD—Three
New York Yankees pitcher Joe
Verbanic, outfielder Steve Whi
taker and outfielder-first base
man Mike Hegan were lost to
the club Friday for Army
Reserve duty.
Verbanic and Whitaker will
miss the weekend series with
Kansas City and Hegan will be
lost for two weeks.

Brown netted eight of his 20 in
the third stanza with Ribock
and David Davidson scoring six
each.
The North pulled to witnin
seven points on several occa
sions in the period, but the
South managed to stay ahead
each time. At the end of the
third quarter, the South held a
73-55 advantage.
The North pulled out all stops
in the final minutes of the
game with Rudy Kinard of Dru
id Hills, Atlanta, scoring 10
points.
South Fulton s Curtis Persons
sank a layup to pull the North
to within four points of the lead
with 1:47 minutes to go. But a
free throw and a layup by
Brown put the game on ice for
the South.
Brown scored 20 points for
the South and Bond 14. Kinard
was high man for the North
with 20. Jerry James of Rome
had 14 and George Westbrook
of Madison 10.

NEW YORK (UPD—The New
York Mets will discontinue
operation of their Williamsport

League effective at the end of
this season.
Ruth All-Stars were defeated by
Hampton, 4-2, Wednesday night
in the second game of a best
two-of-three series for the Dis
trict Championship.
Ricky Rissman was Griffin’s
losing pitcher. Gene Mosley was
credited with the victory.
The third game of the series
was scheduled tonight, but has
been postponed. A date and
time will be announced.
The winner of the district tour
nament will play in the state 13-
year -old Babe Ruth Tourna
ment in Newnan beginning Mon
day.

Chiefs Battle
Generals To

ATLANTA (UPD — The At
lanta Chiefs fought the New
York Generals to a 1-1 tie In
an Eastern Division National
Professional Soccer League con
test Wednesday night.
A sparse crowd of 5,942 fans
watched the contest.
The tie pushed the Chiefs a
little farther bad: in their quest
for an eastern division title,
leaving them in second place 20
points behind Baltimore. New
York is in fourth place.
New York took the lead with
a boot early in the first as Julio
Alas got the ball by Chief goalie
Sven Lindberg.
Atlanta captured its poin t

Bloomfield smashed a hard
drive into the left corner of the
net.

NEW YORK (DPI) — Cal
Koonce will dress in a New
York Mets’ uniform for the first
time Friday night.
The veteran righthander, a
relief specialist with the Chica
go Cubs this season, was
acquired by the Mets Wednes
day for the $20,000 waiver price.
He appeared in 34 games with
the Cubs, compiling a 2-2
record.
