THE CHISHOLM TRAIL of
Old West fame may have
been blazed by an Indian,
not a cowboy, according to
the history behind this
tombstone near Anadarko,
Okla. Delaware Indian
Black Beaver, Army scout
and pathfinder, is credited
with leading troops from
Ft. Cobb, Indian Territory,
to Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.,
in 1861, leaving a trail that
was followed by freight
hauler Jesse Chisholm six
years later. Chisholm’s
wagon tracks were then
followed by cowboys driv
ing longhorn cattle from
Texas to railroads in
Kansas.
Rival Units Os
China Red Guard
Locked In Fight
. By CHARLES R. SMITH
HONG KONG (UPD—Fierce
battles between rival gangs of
Red Guards in the violence
racked city of Canton left more
than 400 persons dead or
injured, Hong Kong newspapers
reported today.
Other reports from official
Communist Chinese agencies
made public a long-secret
document on the dismissal of
former defense minister Peng
Teh-Huai, a Chinese Korean
war hero now blasted as an
enemy of party chairman Mao
Tse-tung.
The streets of Canton largest
city in southern China, were
littered with dead, travelers
arriving in this British Crown
Colony said. They said bodies
were decomposing in the streets
and had not been removed
because “the struggle for power
was so intense no one knew who
had the authority to take
action.”
Guards on Rampage
The travelers’ reports of
Mao’s Red Guard fanatics on a
rampage in Canton and other
areas of southern China were
published by the South China
Morning Post and the Sing Tao
newspapers.
“Lawless elements” went on
a wild spree of killing, looting
and arson and there were
rumors that army units were en
route to Canton to restore
order, the arrivals said.
They said one clash between
rival Red Guard student gangs
lasted three days last week.
More than 400 persons were
killed or Injured, they said.
The document detailing the
ouster of Peng, one of the few
military men appointed a field
marshal before ranks were
abolished, accused him of
opposing the austre brand of
communism that Mao was
imposing on China in the late
17505.
The document was a “deci
sion” adopted by the Commu
nist party Central Committee at
its eighth plenary session at
Lushan, Kiangs! Province, in
August, 1959.
Linked in Struggle
It was broadcast in full by
Peking Radio along with editor
ials from the theoretical journal
Red Flag and the party
newspaper Peking People’s
Daily linking Pen with Pres
ident Liu Shao-chi, Mao’s rival
the China mainland.
Specifically the document
accused Peng of opposing Mao’s
“general line for building
socialism, the great leap
■ in the power struggle sweeping
forward and the people’s
communes.”
Liu was charged with trying
to defend Peng and seeking a
review of his case.
At the same meeting the
party dismissed army chief of
staff Kuang Ke-chung and
several other top army officers,
Peking Radio said.
Red Flag said "the greatest
historical achievement of this
meeting was the fact that it
crushed the plot of the antiparty
clique headed by Peng Teh-huai
M
Peng and some of the others
were permitted to retain their
party membership and political
jobs but were stripped of power
in the military.
