During the two weeks, the players will attend two practice ses sions, attend a “skull” session and eat lunch. Coach Max Dowis, who is the youngest of three coach ing brothers, is putting the 44-player squad through a pace that will “separate the men from the boys.” The players did not know what to expect in Coach Dowis when they reported for practice, now they have come to love him. Max Dowis is a football man and is preparing a team that should be a winner. Inexperience has hurt the Eagles. However, the young er players have moved rapidly to vie for positions left by graduation. Coach Dowis said that the improvement of the younger players “has given us a shot in the arm.” Coach Dowis started the week by saying that the first session of camp did not make him feel optimistic, how ever, by the second day, the tune had changed and his re port said the Eagles were progressing “real well.” Hard knocking and good blocking are the basic found ation for a successful football team. The Eagles are get ting a lot of knocking and are being taught to do a lot of blocking. Most have come out of the practice sessions with bruises and skinned places to show for the work. If hard work and good coaching will make the Eagles a success in the upcoming season, they are well on their way. A Few Words For The Occasion Not long now before school starts again. Here are a few appropriate words: • “Education has for its object the formation of character.” — Herbert Spencer • “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” — Henry Adams • “Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much; wisdom is humble that he knows no more.” —- William Cowper • “Natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning by study.” — Francis Bacon • “The test and the use of man’s education is that he finds pleasure in the exercise of his mind.” — Jacques Barzun • “Our pay is too low.” — The Teachers • “Where did the summer go?” — All of Us ♦ Guest Editorial ♦ Three Cars? Then Thank Mom MIAMI HERALD New government figures show that almost half of the nation’s women between 18 and 64 hold down full-time jobs. More than half of those who collect weekly paychecks are married and living with their husbands. They contri bute a respectable 40 percent of their average family in come. This, says the Department of Labor, is the main reason why the number of families in the $12,000 - $15,000 in come bracket has shown a remarkable increase. They have graduated from two-car to three-car families (Mom, Dad and the teenagers) and they buy most of the expensive color TV and air conditioning. Mom makes it all possible by bringing home almost half of the bacon. But she is stuck with it. She has to work now, to support the family in the style to which it has become accustomed. I have trouble mak ing friends, and am concerned about this. H.B. Though it is true that Jesus said: “Take up your cross and follow me,” it doesn’t always follow that real Christians have no friends. You may lose some of your friends who love confor mity to the crowd more than a good conscience, but you should gain others. Christ gives one in ner strength, and people are at tracted to a person of strength. Ask yourself these questions: Am I cheerful? Do I compliment others freely? Am I critical of those who do not conform to my ideals? Do I feel better than my associates? Do I glory in my own goodness, or do I give God the glory for what I am? The best way to have friends Is to be one. Search out some lonely young person and be friendly with them. Don’t wait for others to come to you. If you would share Christ, share your self, your love, and your under standing. VOR TODAY HOM W'S Cbe Upper He spoke to them in a parable to show that they should keep on praying and never loose heart. (Luke 18:1, NEB) PRAYER: Lord, we do not so much ask that we be taught how to pray as that Thou wilt teach us to pray. Save us from dis couragement and despair, from giving in to temptations th a t would hinder us from living at our best. For Jesus’ sake. Amen. WORLD ALMANAC FACTS Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey will soon begin looking for clues to the location of heavy met als on the continental shelf off the coast of North Carolina, says The World Almanac.
