WASHINGTON (UPD—Michi
gan Gov. George Romney’s
charge that the Johnson admni
nistration has "brainwashed”
the American people on Viet
nam contains all the makings of
a major issue in next year’s
presidential campaign.
The administration apparently
thinks so too for it wasted no
lime Wednesday in firing back
at Romney, a leading but still
unannounced GOP candidate for
the White House.
The controversy began earlier
this week when Romney said in
an interview that he had been
"brainwashed” during a 1965
tour of Vietnam with eight
other governors.
Asked about the statement at
a news conference Wednesday,
the governor said, "If you want
to get into a discussion of who’s
been brainwashing whom I
suggest you take a look at what
the administration has been
telling the American people.
The information has not been
accurate.”
He quoted defense secretary
Robert 8. McNamara as saying
at a news conference in Johnson
City, Tex., last December that
draft calls might be cut with an
accompanying slowdown in the
U.S. military buildup for
Vietnam. He also cited a report
that the administration hoped to
avoid a tax increase and
expected a cutback in purchases
of bombs and military aircraft.
"The people have been told
repeatedly that with just one
more step we would be able to
handle the situation ... that we
would have the boys home by
the end of the year,” Romney
said. "That hasn’t happened.”
The administration, always
sensitive to "credibility gap”
charges, was quick to reply to
the governor’s blast. The
defense department, in a
statement, said that Romney
"grossly distorted the record.”
It said draft calls for the 10
months of 1966 totaled 314,980,
or 136,480 fewer than In the first
10 months of 1967.
Gov. Philip H. Hoff of
Vermont, one of President
Johnson’s most steadfast sup
porters, called a special news
conference to denounce Romney
for using what he termed
"McCarthy tactics of guilt by
Innuendo.”
During the 1965 Vietnam tour,
Hoff said, Romney was "conspi
cusos” by thp number of
questions he asked officials who
briefed the group.

New Appeal Expected In
Gwinnett Murder Case
ATLANTA (UPI) — Alec S.
Evans, convicted in the 1964
murder of a Gwinnett County
policeman, was expected to ap
peal the denial Wednesday of
his plea for a habeas corpus
writ, delaying again his death
date from a 1965 sentencing.
Evans and Vinson Eugene
Williams, also convicted In the
shooting death of Patrolman
Jerry Everett three years ago,
were both denied habeas corpus
writs by U.S. District Court
Judge Frank Hooper. They
have been confined on Death
Row at Reidsville State Prison
for nearly two years.
New execution dates were to
be set by Gwinnett Superior
Court Judge Charles Pittard,
but Evans probably will appeal
the decision to the U.S. sth
Circuit Court of Appeals in
New Orleans.
The pair was convicted in 1965
in the death of Everett, one of
three officers found slain with
their own guns In April, 1964, and
a long string of appeals followed.
Evans was turned down by the
