Elderly, Chronic
Urged To Get
Flu Immunization
ATLANTA (UPD — Elderly
and chronically sick persons or
others for whom a case of
Asian flu could prove fatal have
been urged to get immunized
against the disease before this
winter, when a major flu out
break is expected.
The National Communicable
Disease Center here said Thurs
day the nation will experience
“substantial numbers of cases
of A-2 (Asian) influenza...
especially in the eastern part of
the country.”,
More people will be suscepti
ble to the flu, the CDC said,
because there has bean no out
break since 1964 - 65 and re
sistance would be lowered.
Annual immunication against
flu is not necessary for every
one but is protective to groups
known to have a high mor
tality rate from flu. Bivalent
vaccine — against two types of
flu — was recommended for
the aging and chronically ill.
Those with no shots since July,
1963 will need two vaccinations
between Oct. 1 and early De
cember. Others will need a
booster shot.
The flu season usually lasts
from late November through
March or April.

Selassie’s ‘Yacht’

For US Taxpayers
By FRANK ELEAZER
WASHINGTON (UPD—Em

vessel-smuggler chaser (check

about $4 million to date and
now is in need of major repairs.

The cost is a secret.
But testimony published today
by the House Appropriations
subcommittee on foreign aid

Q — How successful are kid
ney transplants? How do they
compare with the artificial kid
ney?
A— Kidney transplants are
still experimental, but im
provements in technique are
being made. In general, the
more closely related the recipi
ent is to the donor, the better
are the chances for a successful
transplant. If a transplant
works, the recipient can live
a normal life and need worry
very little about his kidneys,
whereas the uremic patient who
depends on an artificial kidney
must take time out frequently
to be hooked up to this compli
cated device.
Q — Will washing bed clothes
in soft water help prevent or
cure bedsores?
A— The hardness of the
water in the laundry would not
be a factor. Bedsores are caused
by localized pressure. Various
devices for relieving the pres
sure by distributing it more
evenly are helpful. One of the
best of these is a special water
mattress that uses the total flo
tation principle.
Q — I am aware of the special
precautions needed in lifting
heavy weights to prevent back
Injuries. Are there any exercises
that will strengthen the back
muscles?
A —Bending forward and
touching your toes from a
standing position or from lying

The original cost of de
mothballing and remodeling the
vessel was about $2.5 million
and another $500,000 was spent

Norwegians have since been
replaced by an Ethiopian crew,
plus one Frenchman.
Friendly Gesture
The transfer was widely
criticized in Congress at the
time but was defended by aid
officials as an appropriate
response to a request by the
head of a friendly government
in need of military assistance.
Today’s testimony showed

muscles but not to the point
of making it safe to life heavy

of your legs. These exercises
should be avoided if they cause

be avoided, period.
Q — For the past two years
I have had bouts of what one
doctor says is angioneurotic
edema. Another doctor calls it
urticaria. What is the cause?
A— Urticaria is hives and
angioneurotic edema is also
called giant hives, so there is
no essential disagreement be
tween your doctors. The cause
is allergy but discovering the
offending allergen is often diffi
cult. A continuous search for
it should be made until it is
found because only by removing
the cause can you get lasting
relief.
Q — Can the white blood
cell count fall to half the normal
count? What can be done to
bring it back? What is leuko
penia?
A— Yes, the white count
may fall and when it does you
have leukopenia. This may be
caused by anemia, various drugs
and some Infectious diseases.
Before the condition can be
treated, the cause must be de
termined.

All worked 12 hours on and 12
hours off. The police and fire
departments each have 300
men, but the majority stayed
off duty at “continuous profes
sional meetings” in support of
their demand for a $1,200 across
the board pay increase.
Mayor Anthony Flask asked
Gov. James A. Rhodes to send
in the National Guard but was
refused. He took to television
Thursday night to ask the city
to keep cool during the crisis.
The mayor said his staff
would seek a court injunction to
get the policemen and firemen
back to work.
“And if they don’t heed the
order when we get it, I’ll Invoke
the Ferguson Act,” the mayor
warned. "And I mean ft.”
The Ferguson Act forbids
Ohio state and local employes*
to strike. It carries a penalty of
dismissal. A dismissed employe
may be rehired but he cannot
receive pay increases for a year
and stays on probation for two
years.
Donald Hann!, attorney for
the policemen and firemen,
denied they were striking. He
said the men were “attending a
professional meeting.”
