Q. It was my understanding
that Medicare would pay all of
my hospital bills. I received a
bill for $65.00 from a stay in the
hospital. Should I pay this? L.N.,
Zebulon.
A. Yes. Medicare does not pay
all of your hositapl bills. You
must pay the first S4O during
each “spell of illness.” Also, cer
tain items and services such as
telephones, television, etc. may
not be covered. If you have a
private room, you also must pay
the difference.
If you have a question about
Social Security, send it to the

inquiries must be signed and

Q — What are scabies? I
think I have them. Could one
get them from a toilet seat?
I have black specks all over
the lower part of my body that
itch. What is the best treat
ment?
A— Scabies is the name
of the disease caused by the
itch mite. It is sometimes called
the 7- year itch. It is transmit
ted by personal contact (shaking
hands, wrestling, etc.) but you
can add it to the list of diseases
that are not transmitted by
toilet seats. The lesions are
small burrows with tiny blisters
at one end. The small blac’
specks you descibe are more
likely to be crabs (public lice).
You had better have a doctor
make a firm diagnosis before
applying what might be the
wrong treatment.
Q — I have a terrific itching
and burning of my eyelids. The
skin around my-eyes is inflamed
and puffy. What could cause
this? Is there any cure?
A— Some form of allergy
or sensitivity to a cosmetic
preparation or scented soap
are the most likely causes. If
your doctor can discover the
cause, avoiding it is the best
treatment.
Q —- I have Intense itching
all over my body at night after
I retire. What causes it? What
is the best treatment?
A — The most likely cause
is dry skin. This used to be
called winter itch because it
was seen mostly in persons who
lived in steam - heated houses.
It is now seen in summer as
well in persons who spend most
of their day in air - conditioned
buildings. It is always aggra
vated by the dry air striking
your body when you disrobe
to retire.
Victims are improved by add
ing moisture to the indoor air
andb y taking baths in cool
or lukewarm water, omitting the
use of soap. A bath oil may
be used and will help to prevent
excessive dryness of your skin.

side effects?
A— When indomethacin (In

justed. If this cannot be done
the drug must be withdrawn.
It can cause serious complica
tions in persons who have peptic

it may be valuable in selected

Maddox Fumes Over
Misplaced Quotes
ASHEVILLE, N. C. (UPI)—
Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox
Wednesday threatened to have
United Press International re
porters thrown out of his office
because of a UPI dispatch
Tuesday night on the Southern
Governors Conference.
Maddox referred to a dis
patch which said:
"Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox
accused Dixie governors Tues
day of bowing to King Lyndon
Johnson" by permitting the
"race issue’ to be injected in
the Southern Governors Confer
ence."
Brandishing a copy of the dis
patch, Maddox said, "These
words were not uttered. Any
body who printed a lie like they
did and does not apologize will
not be welcome in the govern
or’s office. I am personally go
ing to invite them out and if
they don’t go out I’m going to
have them thrown out.”
In remarks at a session on
highway safety at the confer
ence Tuesday, Maddox took
Southern governors to task for
allowing the “race issue” to be
injected into the conference.
Maddox’s reference to "the
king” came when he took ex
ception to a proposal by the
Southern Regional Education
Board suggesting the 14-state
governors conference set up a
regional institute to improve

Part of the money for the pro
posed institute would be put up
by the federal government.
The UPI erred in ascribing
the full quotation "King Lyndon
Johnson” to Maddox. The Geor
gia governor used only the word
“king,” but in a context that
made it clear he was referring
to the President.
He told the governors they
should be “like John Hancock,
who wrote his name big (on the
Declaration of Independence)
even though Ije knew the king
wouldn’t like it.
“We should speak with more
truth about problems facing
us,” he said. “We should tell
the truth about the civil situa
tion in our country. The riots
did not have to be. We should
speak out to protect the life
and property of our people.
That’s our main responsibility.
“It looks like the governors
are taking the position that the
king may not like what they’re
saying—or the President may
not like it—and they’re not
speaking out,” Maddox said.
It was not the first time Mad
dox has mentioned a “king”
with apparent reference to
President Johnson. In a discus
sion of the chances of George
Wallace of Alabama being
elected president, Maddox was
quoted in two Georgia news-
