De La Hoz Single
Beats Mets In 9th
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
DPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPD—Credit the
Atlanta Braves' comeback vic
tory over the Mets Thursday
night to Clete Boyer’s brand
new daughter.
Not that the young lady had
an actual hand In that 5-4 tri
umph; but if papa hadn't been
at the hospital waiting for her
arrival, Mike De La Hoz prob
ably wouldn’t have hit a two
run single in the last of the
ninth.
This isn’t to say that Boyer
wouldn’t have done the same if
he had played. The point is that
he didn’t because of the baby
and De La Hoz filled in for
him.
“I wouldn’t have been any
good out there if I had made it
by game time,’’ said Boyer, the
ex-Yankee who now has four
children—three daughters and a
son.
Boyer Was Bushed
“I really sweated this one out
and I was really bushed when
It was all over. I’m happy that
everything turned out all right
for us and the Braves.”
It was one of those nights. To
begin with, the smallest crowd
since the Braves moved to At
lanta, 2,963, was on hand. PhU

Niekro had a two-hit shutout
until Ed Kranepool sliced a
home run barely fair down the
right field line, with two out in
the sixth.
Catcher Bob Decker had a
nightmarish seventh inning
when he had two passed balls
and an error to allow what, un
til De La Hoz’ hit, looked like
the winning run.
The Braves’ lone bright spots
up to the last-inning rally were
home runs by Hank Aaron and
Mack Jones. Aaron’s homer, a
two-run smash in the fourth
that gave the Braves a 2-0 lead,
was his 37th of the season, ty
ing him with Jim Wynn of
Houston for the league lead.
Braves Break Through
Then came the bottom of the
ninth.
Aaron, now hitting .314 with
102 RBI and 107 runs scored, led
off with a walk off reliefer Dick
Selma who came in for rookie
Danny Frisella in the eighth.
Jones, attempting to sacrifice,
was safe on an error by Selma
and Rico Carty, who was
picked off first in the seventh,
sacrificed the runners to second
and third.
That brought up De La Hoz
who had gone O-for-3 while
standing in for Boyer. Mike,
who only had 12 other RBI this
season, ripped a single through
the middle and Aaron and
Jones raced home.
"Maybe,” said jubilant man
ager Billy Hitchcok, “we
should give Clete’s new daugh
ter that ball Mike hit to teethe
on. She’s earned it.”

Griffin B’s, 19-6
Coach Gene Kierbow would
like to forget the first few min
utes of the Griffin-LaGrange "B

would especially like to forget
LaGrange’s first three plays
from scrimmage.
It took the Grangers just three
plays to build up a 12-0 lead over
Griffin. The visitors scored ag
ain the next time they got the
ball. This time it took six plays
to do it.
LaGrange led Griffin 19-0 af
ter one quarter. They held the
lead until the final period when
Griffin scored on a pass from
Mike Bates to Charles Henley.
The game ended, 19-6.
Griffin kicked off to LaGran
ge and on the first play from
scrimmage one of the Grangers’
backs broke away on a 60 yard
run. The extra point kick failed.
LaGrange scored again the
next time It got the ball. How
ever, the touchdown didn’t come
on the first play. It came on the
second.
Griffin’s defense stiffened a
bit and the Grangers had to dr-
