Wins Opry Prize
Mrs. Ronald Collier of R o u t e
two, Griffin, today was named
winner of the Grand Ole Opry
promotion event sponsored by
Radio Station WGRT.
She said she and her husband
would make the trip to Nash
ville, Tenn., to see the world fa
mous production of the Grand
Ole Opry during a weekend
soon.
Rev. Pruett Resigns
The Rev. E. P. Pruett has re
signed as pastor of the First
Assembly of God Church to en
ter full time evangelistic work
and missionary evangelism. The
resignation is effective Oct. 15.
He will continue to maintain
his Griffin residence.

The Club held Its monthly
meeting Sunday with an outing
to High Falls State Park. Plans
re under way for the members
with their old cars to participate
in the Pimiento Festival at
Woodbury on October 18. The

participate in the opening of the
Commercial Bank parking faci
lity on October 25.

This Week At

Revival services began this
week at Sunny Side. Methodist
Church with the Rev. Newton
Scott of Hanleiter Methodist
Church as guest pastor.
Services begin each evening
at 7:30 p.m. Music is under the
direction of Aaron Britt.

To Its Board
The First Federal Savings &
Loan Association of Griffin an
nounces the election of J. Hen
ry Walker 111, to the board of
directors,
Mr. Walker, a life-long resi
dent of Griffin and active in ci
vic affairs, is a graduate of
Griffin High School, of the Uni
versity of Virginia (B.S. in en
gineering) and Clemson Uni
versity (B.S. in textiles), at each
of which schools and universi
ties he was an honor student and
an outstanding athlete.
Mr. Walker has been associa
ted with Rushton Cotton Mills
and Dundee Mills for many ye
ars and is at present the gener
al manager of Dundee Mills.
He is chairman of the Salva
tion Army Advisory Board, a
member of the Boy Scout Exe
cutive Committee and institutio
nal representative, was chosen
as the Jaycees “Outstanding
Young Man - 1958”, is past pre
sident of Little League Baseball,
of the Touchdown Club, of the
United Fund,of the Jaycees, and
of the Griffin-Spalding County
Chamber of Commerce. He is a
member of the Moose Club and
the Elks Club, and a member
of the Rotary Club, having ser
ved as secretary and as a dir
ector of the latter club.
Mr. Walker is a member of the
First Baptist Church, a teach
er in its Sunday School, a mem
ber of its Board of Deacons,
President of the Men’s Brother
hood, and Is the Church Trea
surer.
He is married to the former
Rebecca Roddenbery of Cairo,
Ga., and they are the parents of
three children, Eleanor, Margar
et and Henry. He and his family
reside at 1214 Maple drive.

Shoots Wife,
Takes Children
To Cedartown
BREMEN, Ga. (UPD—Police
say Charles Green fatally shot
his estranged wife here Sunday
night and then threatened to
kill his two small children un
less police let him alone.
Green drove the children, a
boy and girl, to Cedartown,
about 23 miles north of here,
and turned himself over to
state troopers after leaving the
youngsters at the home of his
brother.
Officers said he told them he
wanted to make sure that his
children were with his brother
before giving himself up. He
told the youngsters he would
not hurt them, officers said.
After his wife, Janice Ann,
was shot in front of a down
town theater, police stopped
Green twice and both times
they said he threatened to kill
his children unless he was left
alone.
Authorities trailed him until
he gave himself up. Green was
Jailed at Buchanan in the
Haralson County jail.
Mr. Adams, Sr.
Buried Today
Mr. James Albert Adams, Sr.,
of 226 East Chappell street died
Saturday night at the Griffin-
Spalding County Hospital.
Mr. Adams, who had made his
home in Griffin for 64 years, was
a retired employe of Spalding
Knitting Mills. He was born in
Pike County. Mr. Adams attend
ed the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his widow,
Mrs. Myrtice Upchurch Adams;
a daughter, Mrs. Wilson Norton,
Jr.; four sisters, Mrs. J.H. Br
annon, Sr., Mrs. Bessie Crock
er, Mrs. Ruby Wells, all of Grif
fin, Mrs. Inez Skipper of Jack
sonville, Fla.: four brothers, Mel
vin Adams, Julian Adams, Tal
madge Adams, Derward Adams,
all of Griffin; three grandchil
dren and several nieces and nep
hews.
Funeral services were conduc
ted this afternoon at 4 o’clock
from McDonald Chapel. The
Rev. J. K. Kelley and the Rev.
Melvin A. Bradley officiated.
Burial was in Oak Hill ceme
tery. Friends may visit the fa
mily at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Wilson Norton, Jr., 1108
Glenwood avenue.
Mr. Bethune
Dies Sunday
Mr. Edd Bethune, 87, retired
farmer of Jordan Hill road, died
at the Griffin-Spalding County
Hospital Sunday afternoon. Mr.
Bethune had been a patient for
11 days.
Mr. Bethune had resided in
Spalding County almost all of
his life. A native of Fayette
County, he was a member of the
Mt. Zion Methodist Church in
Zetella.
He is survived by two daugh
ters, Mrs. Y. Z. Allen, Mrs. M.
L. Dover; two sons, Edgar Be
thune, Porter Bethune, all of Gr
iffin; 19 grandchildren, 21 gr
eat-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Tuesday morning at 11
o’clock from Haisten’s Chapel
with the Rev. Wiley Virden of
ficiating. Burial will be in the
County Line Christian Church
cemetery at Digby. Mr. Beth
une’s body will remain at Hais
ten-Funeral Home.
Griffinite’s
Mother Dies
Mrs. Will J. Wright, Sr., of
Sandwich, 111., mother of the
Rev. Orville L. Wright of Grif
fin, died early Sunday morning.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Wednesday morning in
Sandwich, 111.
The Rev. Wright is pastor of
the First Christian Church in Gr
iffin.
In lieu of sending flowers
friends may make a contribu
tion to the building fund of the
First Christian Church.

at the Elks Club beginning at 4

chairman of the group will con
duct the meeting. He is vice pre
sident of Commercial Bank &
Trust Co.
Sen. Robert Smalley of Grif
fin will be the featured speaker.
Frank Lindsey, Jr., executive
vice president of the Georgia
Bankers Association, will be am
ong the state leaders attending.
Mr. Lindsey makes his home in
Griffin.

DENVER (UPD — Sunshine
was substituted for snow, but
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ashley had
everything else—tree, presents,
carols and a traditional dinner—
as they celebrated Christmas
three months early Sunday.
Mrs. Ashley said she decided
to move the holiday up because
her mother, Mrs. Addie Chand
ler of Muskogee, Okla,, was
visiting and it had been 23 years
since they last had a Christmas
together.

Two Girls Hurt
In Wreck Here
Two seven-year-old girls were
injured in an automobile acci
dent Sunday at 13th and West
Solomon streets.
Jennifer Anne Barrow of Ex
periment suffered lacerations
to her lip and Carlen Hoard of
Experiment suffered lacerations
to her head.
Drivers of cars involved were
listed as Wendell Curtis Cobb,
25, of 1029 West Slaton street,
Griffin, and Mrs. Patricia Ann
Barrow, 34, of Experiment.
Damage to the cars was esti
mated at SI,BOO.

Teaches History
At Dahlonega
Billy R. Calhoun, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Albert R. Calhoun,
Route Three, Box 234, Griffin, is
head of the history department
at Dahlonega High School this
year.
He graduated from David Lips
comb College in Nashville,
Tenn., this spring and accepted
the Dahlonega post.

Committee in the national organ
ization.

Revival Is
Postponed
At Damascus
Revival services which were
scheduled to begin tonight at
the Damascus Christian Church
on West Vineyard road have
been postponed. The services will
begin Sunday night.
The mother of Dr. Orville Wri
ght, pastor of the First Chris
tian Church of Griffin, who was
to be guest speaker, died and
funeral services will be held
this week.
The Rev. Dexter Wasson is
pastor.
