Cardinals Whoop It Up
After Winning Pennant
By RUSS GREEN
PHILADELPHIA (UPD —
The new St. Louis Cardinals
whooped it up and the old
Cardinals enjoyed every whoop.
The new Cardinals were the
1967 champions of the National
League after their clinching 5-1
victory Monday night over the
Philadelphia Phillies.
The old Cardinals were a
couple of old pros who had
tapped the same elixir more
than two decades ago.
One was Red Schoendienst,
manager of the new champions,
the other Stan Musial, his one
time roomie and new general
manager of the champions.
It was No. 5 for each,
Schoendienst twice as a Mil
waukee Brave, once as a
Cardinal player, once as a
Cardinal coach and now as
Cardinal manager. Musial had
in four times as a player, once
In his new role.
Champagne Bath
The oldsters, if one dares call
Red and Stansuch, stood by as
quietly as possible to watch the
new breed make it a night to
remember. There wasn’t a
Cardinal of the current era
without a champagne bottle and
there hasn’t been as much
drinking champagne wasted
since the first grape was
crushed.
They poured it on each other,
sloshed it, sprayed it and
paused only occasionally for a
nip. They picked up pint-sized
clubhouse boy Butch Yaktem
and bathed him as a mother
does an infant.
The champagne had been on
Ice for five innings. So were the
Cardinals, held hitless by Dick
Ellsworth until the sixth when
they rallied for four runs.
The new champions grabbed
beer baron Gussie Busch, the
team president, stripped him to
his underwear and drenched
him in champagne. They had
him headed to the shower when
someone mercifully pulled a
light switch. When the lights
went up again, Busch had
skipped.

Whitehead Named
Player Os Week
Bobby Whitehead, GHS full
back, was selected Player Os
The Week today for his outstand
ing performance last Friday ag
ainst the Cedartown Bulldogs.
Whitehead played a fine game
from start to finish but the fir
st few minutes were truly out
standing.
First, the senior fullback, who
plays end on defense, put Ce
dartown in a hole at its own 28
by tackling a would-be-punter be
fore he could kick the ball.
Griffin didn’t score on the fol
lowing drive but a punt left Ce
dartown backed up at its f o u r
yard line.
Cedartown tried a pitchout
but Whitehead deflected the
ball and it rolled into the end
zone. He recovered it there for
Griffin’s only touchdown.
Coach Max Dowis today call
ed the play by Whitehead “a
great individual effort.”
“Bobby played a fine game on
offense and defense,” the Coach
added. “It was by far his most
productive game.”
In addition to those big plays
early in the game, Whitehead
was in on many other tackles.
Offensively, he was Griffin’s
skipper said.
The new breed had its final
innings. There was no respect
for Stan the Man. They scopped
up Musial, smeared him with
shaving cream and dumped him
under the showers.
“It’s tlie only suit I have
along,” Stan sputtered.

biggest running threat. He car
ried the ball 10 times for 61
yards. He had one 12 yard run
called back because of a penalty.
His longest run was a 16 yard
er to kick off a drive that car
ried to the Cedartown 23 before
dying.
Falcons To
Concentrate
On Pass Defense
ATLANTA (UPI) — Falcons
coach Norb Hecker, ruefully
contemplating the damage done
to Atlanta by the passing of
Colts quarterback Johnny Uni
tas, has ordered concentrated
work on pass defense as the
team prepares for the San
Francisco 49ers.
The Colts’ passing attack ac
counted for 419 of the total 508
yards picked up by Baltimore
Sunday in a 38-31 win over At
lanta.
Hecker, at a sportswriters’
lunch Monday, said “We might
not be a contender, but we’re
going to have something to
say” about which team tops the
National Football League.
Defensive back Lee Calland
won the season’s first “key
player of the week” award. The
award went to Calland for his
77-yard touchdown run on a
pass Interception against the
Colts.
