SEC Takes Another
Look At LSU Bengals
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
DPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPD—lt’s, time to
re-evaluate the Louisiana State
Bengals.
The pre-season polls had the
Bengals figured to finish about
midway in the Southeastern
Conference grid standings. On
the basis of three weeks play,
they have to be considered
solid contenders.
The secret appears to be that
oft-injured Nelson Stokley has
finally returned to full health.
The LSU quarterback certainly
appeared to be Saturday when
he led the Bengals to an unex
pected 37-6 rout of Florida — on
the Gators’ home grounds yet.
Stokley has undergone three
operations over the past two
years. He had LSU off-and
winging in 1965, when he was
a sophomore, then missed the
last half of that season. Hopes
for last year collapsed in the
second game when he did like
wise.
This year, Stokley has led
LSU past Rice, Texas A & M
and now Florida. In that last
game, he turned in touchdown
runs of 10 and 50 yards and, in
general, dominated play
throughout.
It now appears that the big
gest SEC game of the season
may be the' Nov. 11 meeting
between Louisiana State and
Alabama down in Baton Rouge.
Alabama, apparently back in
full stride, swept past Missis
sippi Saturday 21-7 in what
should bring an improvement to
the Crimson Tide’s current No.
10 national ranking.
Only A Share
Actually, the best either LSU
or Alabama probably can hope
for is a share of the SEC crown
since the fifth-ranked Georgia
Bulldogs, the other big favorite,
doesn’t play either this season.
Georgia, the current SEC
leader with a 2-0 mark, coasted
past non-conference South Car
olina Saturday 21-0. This week,
the Bulldogs meet Ole Miss at

Kenny Stabler and Dennis

Falcons Fall 38-7
Sloan May Have
To Wait Longer
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — Former
Alabama star Steve Sloan wait
ed 15 months for a chance to
start at quarterback for the
Atlanta Falcons and, on the
basis of that first start, may
have to wait longer than that
for next time to roll around.
Sloan got the nod Sunday be
cause regular quarterback Ran
dy Johnson had a rib injury.
When Falcon coach Norb Heck
er desperately sent in the in
jured Johnson 13 minutes later,
Atlanta was behind by 24 points
and enroute to a 38-7 beating
by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Sloan threw six passes. The
only two that were caught were
by Eagles. One set up Phila
delphia’s first touchdown; the
other was carried 16 yards for
a score by Don Huitz.
"I always wanted to start,”
the depressed Sloan said. "I
studied real hard to get ready.
It just didn’t work right. I know
I have to try to do better. If
I don’t, I’ll probably be playing
ping pong somewhere.”
Hopes Up In Smoke
The Falcons were playing
their first regular season home
game after three losses on the
road. Any hopes they had of
presenting their fans with a
victory went up in smoke dur
ing an eight minute 21 second
span of the first period.
Eagles defensive back Aaron
Martin, who also recovered a
fumble and forced another, in
tercepted a Sloan pass at the
Philadelphia 46 on the first
series after the kickoff. It took
the Eagles five plays to travel
the 54 yards with Izzy Lang
running 21 and Gary Ballman
going the final 17 on an end
around play.
Only 1:24 later, Huitz grabbed
a Sloan pass and the Eagles
were ahead 14-0 with only six
minutes elapsed.
Sloan was unable to move the
Falcons after the next kickoff
and, with Tom Woodeshick go
ing 41 yards on a reverse, the
Eagles quickly added three
more points on a 34-yard field
goal by Sam Baker.
On the first play after the
next kickoff, Atlanta fumbled
at its 30 and it took the Eagles
five plays to score again with
Norman Snead throwing a two l
yard TD pass to Mike Ditka.
Johnson Hit Passes
That’s where Johnson came
in. He completed 15 of 26 pass-

Brodie Pulls Off
Big NFL ‘Coup’
By MARTIN LADER
UPI Sports Writer
John Brodie stopped worrying
about statistics just after he
pulled off the biggest numbers
coup in football history.
Brodie managed to make
himself a central figure in the
war between the National and
American Football Leagues and
when peace was declared last
year the San Francisco quarter
back walked away with a battle
star worth $950,000 over 10
years.
Although he doesn’t rate
among the leaders in overall
statistics, Brodie can be count
ed on to put on a good show
when he takes the field, and his
performance in Los Angeles
Sunday rates four stars even for
the show capital of the world.
The 11-y ear-veteran from
Stanford threw three touchdown
passes, including a 28-yarder to
Sonny Randle in the final
minutes, to give the Forty
Niners an exciting 27-24 victory
over the reviously unbeaten
Los Angeles Rams.
Close Contest
Los Angeles, which had
humbled Dallas the previous
week and entered this game as
a 14-point favorite, scored three
touchdowns in the third quarter
to overcome a 20-0 halftime
deficit. But, trailing 24-20,
Brodie rallied the Forty Niners
to their third victory in four
decisions to tie them with Los
Angeles for second place in the
Coastal Division behind Balti
more.
Brodie, who placed eighth
among league passers last year
and was seventh this season
prior to Sunday’s games, also
threw touchdown passes of 59
yards to John David Crow and
55 yards to Bob Windsor.
period with a two-yard run by
Woodeshick after Snead threw
a 59-yard pass to Jim Kelly.
Hecker was disgusted. “You
can’t give up the football like
we did and get anywhere.” As
for Sloan, Hecker said, “He
didn’t move the ball club very
well did he?”
Hecker said he’d actually fig
ured the Falcons could beat the
Eagles. “We’d played three
tough road games, but we had
hoped that being at home would
make a difference.”
However, Hecker added, “We
knew we had to get a few big
plays and some breaks. We
I didn’t get either.”
With the defeat of Los
Angeles, the Baltimore Colts
and Green Bay Packers stood
out as the only unbeaten teams
left in the NFL after four weeks
of the season. Baltimore over
powered the Chicago Bears 24-3
and the Packers, who show a
tie along with their three
victories, beat the Detroit Lions
27-17.
Dallas won its third game In
four starts by edging the
Washington Redskins 17-14 on a
36-yard pass from Don Meredith
to Dan Reeves with 10 seconds
to play. In other games the
Philadelphia Eagles routed the
Atlanta Falcons 38-7, the New
York Giants tripped the New
Orleans Saints 27-21 and the St.
Louis Cardinals defeated the
Minnesota Vikings 34-24.
Baltimore, held to a field
goal in the first half, rallied
behind a 94-yard touchdown run
with an intercepted pass by
rookie Rich Volk to topple the
Bears. Ordell Braase iced
matters less than four minutes
later by scooting nine yards
with a fumble recovery.
Green Bay’s winning touch
down also came on a fourth
quarter pass interception, this
one of a 20-yard return by Ray
Nitschke. Detroit, capitalizing
on a pair of interceptions off
Zeke Bratkowski, had taken a
10-0 lead in the second quarter
but Bratkowski made amends
