Crash Probe
Continued from page one
be allowed to use the same air
fields as commercial airliners.
Mutual use of airports by the
two types of planes was called
a “crime” by Rep. Roman Pu
cinski, D-Hl., the day following
the tragedy.
Many mysteries are expected
to be solved at the hearing al
though no formal finding will
be made. The hearing is the
last step in the crash investi
gation and much of the testi
mony give here will form the
basis for the final report in the
cause of the crash.
The major question is wheth
er or not the Cessna was off
course at the time of the acci
dent. Tower officials at the
Asheville Airport at first said
the plane was seven miles
from where it should have been
but later denied making the
statement. These officials are
among those expected to testify
at the hearing.
A private investigator for
Lansaire, Inc., Springfield, Mo.,
owner of the small plane, said
the day following the accident
he believed the Cessna had been
given two sets of instructions
by the Asheville tower and was
not able to get out of the way
of the jetliner — which was
taking off — in time.
