LSU’s Stokely Named
SEC Player Os Week
By DAVID M. MOFHT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — Nelson
Stokely, Louisiana’s State’s In
jury-prone quarterback,r today
was named Southeastern Con
ference offense player of the
week by United Press Interna
tional for his role in the Ben
gals* smashing 37-6 upset of
previously unbeaten Florida.
Stokley has undergone three
operations in two years after
having both his sophomore and
junior seasons curtailed by in
jury. But the 170-pound senior
from Crowley, La., showed no
sign of these earlier aliments
Saturday while leading his team
against the favored Gators.
There were other players with
more impressive yardage fig
ures, but none of those were as
effective. He scored twice, on
touchdown runs of 10 and 50
yards, and set up most of
LSU’s other scoring with Ms
passing and ball handling.
Stokley was leading the SEC
in total offense as a sophomore
before suffering a knee injury
and was off to another good
start in 1966 before disaster
struck again midway through
the second game.
LSU Coach Charlie McClen
don made it clear before this
season began that Stokley would
have to stay healthy if the in
experienced Bengals were to
have a decent season. With
Stokley at the helm, they are
3-0 with victories over Rice and
Texas A&M preceding the upset
at Florida.

RETWEEN YOU'N’ME
CLIFTON, N. J.-(NEA)—
\t age 8, Marty Fleckman

Port Arthur, Tex., golf courses
for his father, LN. Fleckman,
a weekend golfer. He began
playing, too. By the time he
was an ancient 11, he decided
to become a great pro

“It seems too early in life

Fleckman, 23, after a sensa

and is as solid as A.T.&.T.
Swarthy, handsome and in

ascetic about the game.
“I couldn’t practice any
more than I do now,*’ he said.
“It’s something you’ve got to
do to be great. The guys who
make it are on the course
when the sun peeps up and
are still there when it goes
down.”
Fleckman never had doubts
about turning pro.
“A man with my ambitions
has to go as high as he can,”
said Marty. "I want to be with
the cream, the Palmers, Nlck
lauses and Players.”
For three days last June,
he did rise to the top. Marty
stunned the golf world by lead
ing after the first and third
rounds of the United States
Open at Baltusrol. He shot
rounds of 67, 73 and 69 before
falling on the final day with

“I wasn’t nervous that last
round,” he said, “I just had
trouble keeping the ball in
play. That’s nothing new with
me.”

Fleckman Aims to Rank
With Golfing Greats
By MURRAY OLDERMAN
NEA Sports Editor
Stroking the ball fate un
charted lands is tbe problem
Fleckman must overcome to
fulfill bls boyhood visions. His
putts are very co-operative
and his drives seem launched
from Cape Kennedy.
At the Open, measuring
units were used on the 10th
and 17th holes to determine
the longest drives. Fleckman
led the field with an average
of 287 yards. Palmer was
ninth with 278 and Nicklaus
13th with 276.
“I have doubts about the ac
curacy of those units,” said
Fleckman, who is honest
rather than modest. “Besides,
I was using a driver off those
tees and Nicklaus used a 3-
wood
“I wouldn’t say that I’m the
strongest driver around—but
I wouldn’t say I’m weaker
than anyone else, either.”
At the University of
Houston, where he was
twice national intercollegiate
champion, Fleckman met
Byron Nelson, one of golf’s
all-time greats.
“Byron began helping me
correct my spray hitting,”
said Fleckman. “I used to
have dead legs. You know, I
wasn’t getting them into my
swing. Now my legs are more
mobile and fluid. It gives my
hands more freedom, too.
“He also set me straight on
griping about putts. I used to
moan if I didn’t make every
six- or 10-footer. He told me
that if you have to count on
sinking all those putts for
par, then it’s not your putting
that’s the problem. It’s your
inability to hit the greens
often enough.”
Fleckman hits greens often.
However, avoiding hikes
through forest and hollow will
determine his future.

Danny Clark Is
Player Os Week
There is a good blocker In
front of every good runner.
Griffin football fans watched
Richard Turner gain more than
75 yards rushing last Friday ag
ainst Therrell High.
Turner ran hard and picked
his holes. But in front of him
was some fine blocking.
One of those blockers, Danny
Clark, was selected today as Gr
iffin High’s Player Os The
Week for his excellent perfor
mances against the Therrell Pan
thers. >'
Clark, with assistance from
Alton Askew, ripped huge hol
es in Therrell’s defense for Grif
fin’s backs to blast through.
Most of the time it was Turner
doing the running. The Griffin
back averaged more than five
yards per carry but a lot of the
credit goes to Clark.

of the season,” Coach Max Do
wis said this morning. “It wasn’t
his fault that we lost. If the rest
of the team had played as well
as Danny we would have won.”
Clark, a 200 pound senior, is
rated one of the Eagles finest
college prospects. He is big,
strong and fast. And he has the
grades to get in practically any
college.
In addition to receiving a high
blocking grade, Danny played a
sound game on defense. How
ever, it was his fine blocking,
especially in the first half, that
drew the praise from coaches.
Coaches are counting on Dan
ny to carry much of the burden
as the Eagles head into their fi
nal four games.
The first of those four comes
up Thursday night when Griffin
entertains Grady.
