U. S. Troops
Blow Apart
Suicide Drive
By EUGENE V. RISHER
SAIGON (UPD—U.S. troops
in the gurerilla-lnfested Mekong
Delta today lowered their
cannon barrels and blew apart
a charging horde of about 500
Viet Cong at only 25 yards.
American spokesmen said the
Gls killed at least 102 Commu
nists, who mounted the suicide
charge in an attempt to cripple
a U.S. drive through the rice
paddles 60 miles below Saigon.
South Vietnamese troops a
short distance away killed
another 28 Viet Cong. The
fighting dealt a severe blow to
the Viet Cong in an area where
it has attracted the greatest
strength in South Vietnam.
Four Missing
U.S. jets dodged Communist
MIG2I interceptors and met
some of the heaviest flak of the
war in bombing at Hanoi and
Haiphong in North Vietnam
Friday, American spokesmen
said. They said three U.S.
planes were lost to ground fire.
It raised to 750 the number of
American aircraft — including
eight helicopters—downed over
the Communist country.
U.S. spokesmen said they are
investigating Communist re
ports that American rockets hit
the center of Hanot and killed
an Indian sergeant serving with
the International Control Com
mission.
The Viet Cong, also reeling
from a major defeat in the
Central Highlands where U.S.
troops seized a strategic peak
at bayonet point, broadcast
announcement of 13 days' truce
covering Christmas, New Year’s
and the Asian lunar new year in
late January and early Februa
ry.
President Nguyen Van Thieu
of South Vietnam earlier said
he ’’believed” the anti-Commu
nist allies would agree to
holiday truce periods. It was
assumed by observers here that
a truce in South Vietnam would
mean a pause in U.S. bombing
Os North Vietnam, despite
criticism by many American
strategists.
Light Action
In the battle of the Central
Highlands, near the bastion of
Dak To 280 miles north of
Saigon, U.S. troops reported
little and light action in the 17th
day of blocking a major North
Vietnamese offensive.
American troops killed 41
Communists Friday in seizing
the summit of Hill 1338, highest
peak around Dak To’s Allied
base. It raised to 765 the
number of Communist bodies
counted in the campaign.
Another 12 North Vietnamese
have been captured. U.S.
spokesmen said 136 Americans
have been killed and 600
wounded since the Highland
battle began Nov. 3.
The Communists apparently
hoped to use Hill 1338’s summit
to harass U.S. positions with
rocket fire. Despite today’s
lesser fighting, top American
commanders said the Highland
battle appears unfinished.
