Ing things pretty routinely.”
The Georgia State Patrol
headquarters here said Friday
night about 35 searchrs were
checking out all leads, and
“there have been a lot of
them.”
The GSP spokesman said
most of the people checked out
have turned out to be coon and
fox hunters.
Searchers concentrated In
Toombs and Tattnall counties
near the towns of Driggers
Comer and Johnson’s Comer,
only nine miles from the pri
son. There has been no direct
contact with the searchers,
however, according to police.
Officers said although resi
dents of the area are calling In
sightings of suspicious persons
for Investigators to check out,
they are more or less cllmatized
to these type of conditions.”
Apparently, frequent escapes
from the state prison have left
people somewhat fearless, the
officer said. He did say, though,
that while not scared, residents
of the area are cautious to the
point they lock doors and win
dows, and remove parts of au
tomobiles and trucks so they
cannot be started or stolen.
Three of the original seven
escapees who fled a work gang
of 46 Inmates Thursday were
recaptured before the end of the
day. The prison truck they stole
to make their getaway was also
recovered.
One of the men, Floyce Wood,
24, was wounded In the leg dur
ing the escape and recaptured
immediately. Another, David
Hyatt, was also captured dur
ing the escape attempt. The
third man back in custody,
James K. Pratt, 25, was found
near the abandoned truck
Thursday night. Officers said
Pratt threw himself into a
ditch beside a road, but was
spotted by a passing motorist.
Still at large last night were
Dean Cochran, 26, of Fayette Co.
Larry Mernetgn, 21, from Ful
ton County, Theo McDaniel, 26,
of Chamblee, and Kenneth
Wood of Madison County, N.C.
