cause “beatniks and peace pro
testors were tearing down
America while we who love this
country were doing nothing for
it.”
He said the loyalty day ex
presses sentiments neither for
nor against the war, “We sim-

Scripto Sales
Show Decline
ATLANTA (DPI) — Scripto,
Inc. has announced a decline in 1
sales and earnings for the first '
three quarters of 1967. 1
R. H. Ferst, Scripto presl- 1
dent, announced Monday that
sales of the writing instruments 1
and cigarette lighters manufac- 1
turer totaled only $23.3 million
as opposed to S2B million a year
ago. He said earnings amounted
to $820,000 or 30 cents a share '
—down considerably from $1.17
million and 43 cents a share for
the first nine months of last
year.
Ferst blamed much of the
loss on sales and earnings for
a former subsidiary, Modern
Carpet Industries.
Richmond Voters
Pick Sheriff
AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPD—Voters
turned out here Tuesday to
elect a new Richmond County
sheriff from among five candi
dates.
Veteran political observers
say the race apparently has
narrowed to three men, E. F.
Atkins, Roger W. Tomlin and
N. Francis Widener Jr.
The remaining candidates are
Charles H. Douglas and Curtis
Tudor Jr.
Tomlin has expressed support
for the establishment of a $200,-
000 police traffic division, while
Widener has received the en
dorsement of COPE, a political
arm of organized local labor.
Atkins has pledged to provide
leadership necessary to put law
enforcement in a proper per
spective.
Five Georgians
Killed In Viet
WASHINGTON (UPD — Five
Georgians are among 127 U. S.
Servicemen killed in Vietnam,
according to latest Defense De
partment casualty reports.
All five of the men were
members of the Army.
The dead Include Capt. Mich
ael A. Crabtree, husband of
Mrs. Lynne G. Crabtree, Colum
bus; Platoon Sgt. William D.
Petersen, husband of Mrs. Lil
lian Peterson, also of Colum
bus; Sgt. Vernon Means, son of
Mr. and Mrs. William C. Means i
of Cordele; Pfc. Jessie W. Con- .
ner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe (
Conner of Statesboro.
The fifth man had been clas
sified as missing in action prior
to Monday when the Pentagen
announced that Spec. 4 Nicklos
B. Janes, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Olend C. Janes of Gainesville is
dead.
Decatur Firm
To Build Dorm
RICHMOND, Va. (UPI) —
Gov. Mills Godwin has an
nounced the award of a $4.2
million contract to the T.C.
Brittain Co. of Decatur, Ga. for
construction of a dormitory at
Virginia Tech.
The planned structure on the
campus at Blacksburg, Va. Is
slated to house 1,250 men stu- i
dents. Specifications call for the 1
dorm to be completed by Aug. i
