1 have just spent 15 minutes and my tem
per getting at a spool of thread encased in
one of the plastic blister packages. The main
reason for encapsulating small items in the
cases is not, the retailer says, for ease in
handling or for attractive display purposes,
but to make it harder for customers to steal
them.
I am tired of paying with not only money
but my time, energy and an occasional cut
finger for others’ dishonesty,
A friend tells me of seeing three clean,
well-dressed youngsters stealing model air
planes from a drugstore. She was going to
suggest they earn money for the models by
dusting off her car parked outside but when
she approached them they ran out the “in”
door, held open by a confederate. The man
ager told her wearily he must watch all chil
dren “like criminals” because he has been
robbed so many times.
We can all recite such incidents and most
of us do at the slightest opportunity. As a
matter of fact, I suppose that while I am

tired of paying for others’ dishonesty, I am
even more tired of hearing adults discuss the
problem and then having them ask, “What’s
got into these kids anyway?”
It’s then when 1 think about the seemingly
pregnant suburban matron in a supermarket
whose “baby” turned out to be a frozen
turkey she was carrying out under her coat.
Her two small children were with her when
the cashier retrieved the bird.
Or I remember a child boasting: “We get
all our stamps free,” while his father smiled
and explained, “The company doesn’t care
about a few stamps.”
Or a conversation 1 overheard last sum
mer comes to mind. A grandmother arguing
with her daughter. The older woman insisted
it was all right to slip her grandson into an
amusement park without paying because
“he’s small for his age and they don’t need
the dime.”
Back to the big question for me. What
HAS got into these kids, anyway?

Home Hints
Pine cones make attractive
tree ornaments if sprinkled with
artificial snow while wet from
a dunking in self-polishing wax.
If the turkey browns early in
the roasting period, cover breast
and drumsticks lightly, either
with aluminum foil or a thin
cloth moistened with fat to pre
vent overbrowning. One exper
ienced cook starts the roasting
with the foil protector, removing
it during the last part of the
roasting to prevent over-brown
ing.
One certain way to tell when
turkey is done is to use a meat
thermometer. Insert it in the
center of the inner thigh mus
cle where it will not touch a
bone. A turkey is done when the
thermometer registers 180 to
185 degrees.
