Hell Marry Lynda Bird
Liked Her Looks,
Mind And Humor
By HELEN THOMAS
WASHINGTON (UPD—
Chuck Robb says he first was
attracted to Lynda Bird John
son by her physical beauty, and
became more enamored be
cause of her “keen mind’’ and
sense of humor.
And when the Marine captain
starts his tour of Vietnam duty
early next year, “I would like
naturally to go over there and
be treated precisely the same
way had I gone over there
under any other circumstan
ces.”
Lynda’s husband-to-be Charles
S. Robb, 28, met with reporters
at the Washington Marine
barracks to discuss the wedding
this Saturday, and how the fact
of being President Johnson’s
son-in-law might affect his
military life.
As a White House aide, Robb
had known Lynda for about a
year before they fell in love. He

began making a pitch for her
hand after she broke up with
actor George Hamilton in July.
What does Robb think of
Hamilton?
“He is a very, very fine
gentleman.”
Vietnam View
As for the Vietnam hitch, he
said: “I will go over and take
whatever job Is assigned to
me.”
A reporter, noting that his
capture by the Communists
would be a big propaganda
item, wondered if that might
not be a consideration in where
he would be sent.
“I would truthfully hope that
it won’t.” Besides, he said, the
chances of his falling prisoner
were “reasonably remote” and
he had no fear on that score.

to wind up in the I Corps area
where most of the Marines are
stationed.
He declined to speculate on
any specifics on grounds this
might be “misconstrued or
misinterpreted” in view of his
relationship to the President.
Robb also sidestepped ques
tions on whether he is
Democrat or Republican, dove
or hawk, saying military
officers try to avoid such
controversial questions as poli
tics, policy and religion.
Going into marriage, he sees
it as “a partnership” requiring
love, respect, understanding.
Both Want Children
Both he and Lynda want
children, “but the time or
number we may leave up to a
little higher authority.”
After their honeymoon, the
Robbs will move into a
furnished home they have
rented in the Washington area.
They will have about four
months together before his
overseas assignment.
Robb says they are both
thrifty, and don’t plan to live in
very luxurious fashion. He’ll be
drawing a bit over SIO,OOO a
year in Vietnam—the same as
her salary for writing part time
for McCall’s magazine. And
then there’s her military
allotment.
He has no political aspira
tions, and is undecided whether
to make the military a career.
He and Lynda have not decided
where they will live eventually,
although Robb does like Texas.
What about his relationship
with the President?
They talk about all sorts of
things, even Vietnam. And they
play golf together.
That’s all top secret stuff
even the golf score.
