THE DOCTOR SAYS
Eye Drops Check
Glaucoma Progress
fc Wayne G. Brandatadt, M.D.
R — What is glaucoma? What
uses it? How can its progress
I prevented?
h — Glaucoma is a disease of
I eye in which the tension
thin the eyeball is increased,
le resulting pressure on the
tina causes, in the early stag-
I rainbow tints or halos ar
rd lights, especially at night.
I the disease progresses, there
Ly be headache and contrac
|n of the field of vision. Glau
pa is the greatest single cau-
I of blindness in persons who
p past 60. The cause is an ob-
Auction of the drainage of the
tide the eyeball. Causative
ctors include a hereditary ten
pcy. hardening of the arteries
d farsightedness.
The first step in prevention is
r persons over 50 to have the
iision of the eyeball measur
every two years or oitener.

Warnings to victims of early
glaucoma to avoid alcohol are
no longer given. Alcohol may
even decrease the tension pro
vided the total fluid intake is not
excessive, as would be the case
if six bottles of beer were con
sumed in a brief period.
Restrictions on the use of tea
and coffee have also been lifted
as they do not affect the intra
ocular tension any more than
'the drinking of other fluids. Al
though no definitive studies on
smoking and glaucoma have
been made, many doctors belie
ve smoking should be restricted
because it causes contraction of
the small arteries in the eye.
Viewing television, however, Is
harmless unless it takes place
in a room so poorly lighted that
the pupils become dilated.
Q — About a year ago, my doc
tor said I had glaucoma in both
eyes and that I must use eye
drops the rest of my life. Is there
any operation for glaucoma?
The doctor says my vision is 20-
40. What does that mean?
A— The removal of a small
portion of the iris is an opera
tion that benefits selected cas
es, but, unfortunately, not the
majority of persons over 50 who
have glaucoma. It is better in
most cases to put your faith in
the regular use of the eye drops.
A vision of 20-40 means that
with the eye tested you can see
clearly at a distance of 20 feet
what a normal eye can see at
40 feet.
Q — I am 73. I see halos ar
ound lights at night. My doc
tor says I do not have glaucoma.
What causes this?
A— In addition to glaucoma,
cataract and certain lesions of
the cornea can cause persons to
see halos.

ALWAYS THE BELLE of glamorous holiday evenings, velvet is more elegant than
ever this season. David Morris creates a silhouette (left) that’s all grace and motion
in this sleeveless caftan of radiant boulevard velvet, slit up one side to float a panel of
pleated chiffon. Strapless gown (right) in boulevard velvet by Cameo is frosted with a

POLLI'S POINTERS
Fingerprints
DEAR POLLY — I have a
suggestion for Mrs. B. who has
greasy fingerprints on her
wood-paneled walls. This is a re
medy for removing them from
wood furniture and it might work
on her paneling. Add three ta
blespoons of boiled linseed oil
and one tablespoon of turpen
tine to one quart of hot water.
Mix well and let cool. Wring a
soft cloth out of this solution and
apply to the wood. Dry at once
with a soft cloth and then rub
to a polish. — PAT

DEAR POLLY — I want to
tell Mrs. B. that I swear by le
