went to Zebulon recently for
three games with Pike County
High. They lost them all.
Milner invited Pike to Lamar

ged the defeats. The Milner "B”
boys, varsity girls, and varsity
boys won.
The ‘‘B’’ boys started the
sweep w’ith a 56-55 victory.
Milner’s girls followed with a
62-37 win. The Falcons survived
a fourth quarter blitz to win, 70-
68.

Sidney Horne scored 24 for the
Falcon “B” team.
It was Milner’s balance ag
ainst Pike’s Reba Middlebrooks
in the girls' game. The balance
won.
Romona Edwards, who play
ed her best game of the season,
scored 22 points for Milner. Di
ane Bryan made 20 and Vickie
Maddox 10.
Middlebrooks scored 28 of
Pike’s 37 points.
Coach Chuck Miller credited
the win to fine shooting by the
forwards and a great defense by
the guards.
I “Our guards held Pike to
four points in the fourth. Those
came on free shots. They didn't
make a field goal In the last se
ven minutes,” he said.
The game was much closer
than the final score indicates.
Milner had only a two point lead
35-33, after three periods.
However, the Lamar Coun.
tians outscored the visitors 17-4
in the fourth.
LA Rams, Green Bay
Bigger Than Lynda Bird
By FRED McMANE
UPI Sports Writer
It’s bigger than Lynda Bird,
and that’s saying a lot.
There won’t be too many
times a professional football
game will preempt the mar
riage of the daughter of the
President of the United States
on television, but today’s game
between the Green Bay Packers
and the Los Angeles Rams has
that honor.
! Bobby Mann, Claire Edwards,
Wyona Ingram, Brenda Phina-
• zee and Brenda Mann threw
s up the defense that Pike couldn’t
i penetrate.
Coach Miller called the boys
■ game a great one. “Both teams
, played well,” he said.
Milner took a 10 point lead
! <sl-41) into the fourth but had
to survive a Pike press to win.
Milner controlled both boards.
“That’s where we won,” Coach
I Miller said.
i Bobby York scored 25 points
’ and claimed 24 rebounds. Tony
Laney had 16 points and 14 re
, bounds. Skipper Brannon made
. 11 points and grabbed nine re
t bounds. Randy Buffington scor
. ed nine points, Wayne Vaughn
made seven and Arthur Ethrid-
• ge two.
Milner was ahead 15-13 after
1 one quarter, 31-29 at halftime
and 51-41 after three periods.
Randy Smith scored 21 points
l for Pike. Wayne Green made 18
and Donnie Connell 12.
This crucial game between
the Packers and the Rams is to
be nationally televised by CBS
TV today during the same time
, that Lynda Bird will be
I exchanging marital vows with
. Marine captain Charles Robb on
. the other major TV networks.
5 In Texas, Too
> Even her daddy’s television

the wedding since it is an

A football game has to be
special to rate that kind of
treatment and this one surely
is. It’s the first of two big
games for the Rams, but
without a victory in this one
next week’s game against
Baltimore will probably mean
I nothing.
I The Colts, who lead the
| National Football League’s
Coastal Division with a 10-0-2
record, meet lowly New Orleans
on Sunday in what should be an
easy victory for them, so the
Rams (9-1-2) are faced with the
supreme task of winning today
to keep their division hopes
alive.

the Colts could clinch the
division title by beating the
Saints Sunday.
The remainder of the week’s
NFL activity will be played on
Sunday. Baltimore is at New
Orleans, Minnesota at Chicago,
Cleveland at St. Louis, Philadel
phia at Dallas, Washington at
Pittsburgh, Detroit at New York
and San Francisco at Atlanta.
Other than the Baltimore-New
Orleans game the most impor
tant Sunday contest is the
Cleveland-St. Louis clash. A
victory by the Cardinals would
cut the Browns’ lead to one-half
game and make for an exciting
finish on the final week. This
one is rated a tossup.

Bruins
Win
United Press International
It took only one game to
remove the doubts about the
UCLA basketball team.
The powerful Bruins, billed in
pre-season reports as the
greatest college basketball team
ever assembled, almost
wrecked their image for good in
their opener with Purdue a
week ago when they just barely
squeaked out a 73-71 victory in
the final second of play.
But coach John Wooden’s
squad found a return to their
home court most invigorating
Friday night as they played like
the nation’s top-ranked team
should by crushing Wichita
State 120-86. It was the Bruins’
36th straight victory.
Wooden didn’t even need his .
regulars for much of the contest.
as the Bruins raced to a 56-31;
halftime lead by connecting on I
60.5 per cent of their field goals. '
Big Lew Alcindor, who finishedi
with 28 points, tallied 18 in the \
first half and the reserves took j
over for most of the second l
half.
The return to Pauley Pavilion,
where the Bruins have never
lost was especially good for
Mike Lynn, who had been
benched after a poor perfor
mance against Purdue. Lynn
entered the game as a
substitute with 6:44 remaining
in the first half and finished the
game with 21 points.
Purdue, on the other hand.

Namath, Mathis Ailing;
Both Doubtful Starters
By United Press International
The New York Jets may have
to start their showdown against
murders’ row without the
benefit of their best weapons—
quarterback Joe Namath and
halfback Bill Mathis.
Namath, the heart of the Jets’
offense, and Mathis, New
Yo r k’s No. 1 halfback,
came down with 100-degree
temperatures Friday and might
not be in the lineup against the
Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. •
Namath also has been nursing
the thumb of his passing hand |
that was bruised last week i
against Denver.
The Jets and the Houston
Oilers have identical 7-3-1
records to lead the Eastern
Division of the American
Football League, but Houston
has a slight edge in the
opponents that remain on its
schedule.
After meeting the Chiefs, the
Jets still must face the Oakland
Raiders and the San Diego
Chargers, who are running one
two in the Western Division.
The Oilers meet Oakland on
Sunday and San Diego the
found a trip to the West Coast
most frustrating as the Boiler
makers were upset by Washing
ton 98-87.
The Huskies fell behind in the
first four minutes of play but
built a 52-40 halftime edge behind
the shooting of Dave Carr and
Jay Bond. Purdue, despite 23
points by soph sensation Rick
Mount, never got close in the
second half. Carr finished as
the game's high scorer with 24
points.
In other games involving the
top teams, seventh - ranked
Princeton stretched its record
to 3-0 with a 71-43 triumph over
Colgate while sixth-ranked Day
ton was upset by Eastern
Kentucky 76-75.

Big Games
“All of our remaining games
are big ones,” said Jet coach
Weeb Ewbank, “but I feel our
players know what they have to
do. Our defense has been good
all season. It played well
against Denver. We gave up
only 18 yards passing and 124 on
the ground. Our pass protection
was good and our receivers were
open. We just couldn’t get
i untracked.”
Although the Chiefs haven't
i shown the stuff they had last
I year when they romped to the
AFL title, they still have
enough to throw fear into any
Eastern Division team. Len
Dawson passed for two touch
downs and Mike Garrett rushed
for 192 hards as the Chiefs
ripped. New York 42-18 earlier
in the season.
Tire Raiders could clinch the
Western Division title on
Sunday if they beat Houston and
San Diego suffers a highly
unlikely setback to Miami.
Oakland is 10-1 and San Diego is
8-2-1 with three games left for
each club.
Oakland quarterback Daryle
Laonica, acquired from Buffalo
before the season, turned in his
finest performance last week as
he completed 21 of 34 passes for
325 yards and four touchdowns
in a 41-21 victory over San
Diego.
Hewritt Dixon leads the
Oakland rushing attack, and
Larry Todd and Pete Banaszak
have had to fill in for injured
halfback Clem Daniels.
Flanker Lance Alworth will
be out of action when tire San
Diego Chargers try to keep their
Western title hopes alive
against Miami. With Alworth
out, quarterback John Hadi is
expected to concentrate more
on passing to ends Willie
Frazier and Gary Garrison.
