Mrs. Ragan Dies
Friday Night
Mrs. Lillie Myrtice Gibson Ra
gan of 130 Peachtree street, Ex
periment, died Friday night at
the Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
She was born in Fulton County
and had made her home in Grif
fin since childhood. Mrs. Ragan
was a member of the Faith Tem
ple Church of Griffin. Mr. and
Mrs. Ragan celebrated their
41st wedding anniversary Feb.
14 this year.
Survivors include her husband,
Mr. Lewis Monroe Ragan; three
sisters, Mrs. Vera Sims and
Mrs. Mary Reid, both of West
Point, Ga„ and Mrs. Nellie KUI
-of Griffin; a brother,
Horace F. Gibson of Griffin; se
veral nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ragan was a retired em
ploye of Dundee Mill No. One.
Funeral services will be held
Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Kincaid
Methodist Church. The Rev. Da
vid L. Ash and the Rev. James
Aiken will officiate. Burial will
be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The body was carried to the
residence this afternoon where
it will remain until taken to the
church to lie in state 30 minu
tes before the funeral.
McDonald Funeral Home Is
in charge of plans.
Stranded Governor
Gets Georgia Lift
ATLANTA (UPD — About the
last thing Gov. Dan K. Moore
of North Carolina expected
Friday was to be chauffeured to
Tennessee by a Georgia state
trooper.
But that’s what happened
when Moore’s commercial flight
from Raleigh, N.C., to Chatta
nooga, Tenn., was grounded in
Atlanta and the waylaid gov
ernor paid a surprise visit on
Gov. Lester Maddox.
After a brief chat, Moore and
his wife were driven to the east
Tennessee city, compliments of
Maddox, in a state car, driven
by a Georgia trooper.
The Moores were visting Mrs.
Moore’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
C. H. Coulter of Pikeville, Tenn.
Two Os Four Girls
Who Escaped Caught
Two juveniles were arrested
in Griffin Friday on charges of
escape from the Clayton County
Juvenile Home.
Four girls had escaped from
the home Friday. The two
arrested in Griffin will be turn
ed over to Clayton County auth
orities.
Buford Man
Killed In
Monroe Wreck
A Buford man was killed and
a Douglasville man injured in a
traffic accident Friday on U.S.
41, 4.6 miles north of Forsyth
on U. S. 41.
Emmett L. Giddins, 56, of 355
Elliott street, Buford, was dead
on arrival at the Monroe County
Hospital in Forsyth. He died of
internal injuries.
Injured was Lloyd Donald Phil
lips, 44, of 407 Park street, Dou
glasville. He suffered lacerations
to his face, and fractures to his
right arm and right knee. He
was taken to a Macon hospital.
A state patrol report said Gid
dins vehicle ran off the right side
of the road, back across the
road in the path of Phillips’ car.
Damage was estimated at SI,BOO.
The fatality raised the toll for
the five county Griffin area to
52 for the year. This compares
with 50 for the same period last
year.
Clifford C. Phillips, 39. of Sto
ckbridge suffered fractures to
his ribs and left leg Friday in
an accident 1.3 miles north of
Stockbridge on U. S. 23 and Ge
orgia 42.
The car he was driving was
struck in the left side by a hit
and-run vehicle.
Phillips was taken to Georgia
Baptist Hospital in Atlanta. Da
mage to his car was estimated
at SSOO.

Presley Wins
Furman Honor
Carl Presley of Griffin has
been named winner of the Cunn
ingham Scholarship at Furman
University in Greenville, S.C.
This is one of the highest aw
ards that a freshman can earn
at the institution.
Presley is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Carlton Presley, 325 South
Hill street, Griffin.
The scholarship is presented
in honor of Mr. and Mrs. G.
Watts Cunningham of Laurens,
S. each year to the most out
standing member of the fresh
man class.
Presley graduated from Grif
fin High where he was an out
standing student and campus
leader.
Pritchard Back
In Jail Here
J. B. Pritchard, who was in
dicted by a called session of the
Spalding County Grand Jury on
charges of forgery and robbery
by use of an offensive weapon,
was returned to the Spalding Co
unty jail Friday after a writ of
habeas corpus was denied in
Fulton Superior Court.
Pritchard charged in the writ
that he was being held in Fulton
County jail in violation of h i s
constitutional rights.
It was denied by Judge Sidney
T. Schell of Fulton Judical Cir
cuit. Hearings on the writ had
been postponed three times.
Pritchard was returned to Grif
fin by Sheriff Dwayne Gilbert
and Griffin Judicial Circuit Sol
icitor Andrew Whalen.
