Husbands, Fathers Had Only Few Hours With Families
By RON YOUNGBLOOD
United Press International
In thousands of American
homes today it was, “Kiss
daddy goodbye, honey.”
Housewives and mothers,
aware this day might come but
hoping fervently it wouldn’t,
said goodbye to their men.
President Johnson has called
14,787 Air National Guard and
Navy reserve' airmen to duty.
The husbands and fathers had
only a few hours to see to their
families before they had to rush
off to their bases and join their
outfits.
Many were on active duty
Thursday night. The rest had to
report today, tonight or by
early Saturday.
The reservists, most of them
proud to be “weekend war
riors,” were prepared, as
fighting men, but unprepared as
husbands and fathers. The
callup, the largest since the
Berlin crisis of 1961, caught

Sgt. Edward Kruk, 22, North
Tonawanda, N.Y., plans to
marry Mary Ann La Duca, 21, a
week from Saturday. Today he
was at the Niagara Falls Air
Force Base with his outfit, the
107th Tactical Fighter Group.
“I called her as soon as I
found out,” Kruk said. “We’re
going to go ahead as planned. If
I’m here, that is, we’re going to
go ahead.”
Reaction to the news ranged
from the unprintable to the
philosophical. The men mostly
accepted it as part of a job they
had bargained for. Their women
mostly were resigned.
“I guess I asked for it,” said
Lt. Nelson Ferguson, 30, Playa
Del Rey, Calif. “I was in the
Navy eight years and I missed
flying.”
Lt. Richard S. Scalo, Bridge
port, Conn., a lawyer, was
resigned apparently to the
disruption in his life. “If I had a
job it wouldn’t be so bad. But

Petty Officer Allan Foxx of
New York City, a single man
working in advertising, was a
bit bitter. “I was expecting a

“If the government cares so
much about the boat (the
Pueblo) why doesn’t the govern
ment have reserves chip in and
buy a boat—of course that’s not
the issue.”
Mrs. Raymond Ketcham,
Swarthmore, Pa., took the news
calmly. Her husband, Cmdr.
Raymond Ketcham, 42, had
been called up with Navy
Fighter Squadron VA 831, which
he commenads.
“Honestly, we don’t like this
callup. But the President has
got to be ready and we have to
be ready too .... we’re

ing.” She said they had talked
about such a possibility for 20
years.

Searchers Find
Part Os Bombs
THULE, Greenland (UPD—
Searchers working on nuclear
contaminated ice found parts of
the hydrogen bombs lost in the
crash of a 852 bomber, U.S. Air
Force officials said today.
Maj. Gen. Richard O. Hunzi
ker said his 40-man search
team found bomb parts on top
of the 6-to 9-foot Ice that covers
the sea off this Danish island.
Nunziker said the ajea around
the crash site was contaminated
by nuclear radiation. He
stressed that all of the
contamination was fixed and not
blowing in the air.
Hunziker said there was wind
in the area and it had blown
snow on his clothing and face
“but I was not contaminated.”
A nuclear physicist, Dr.
Wright Langam of the Los
Alamos, N.M., scientific labora
tory, agreed that “The radiation
is fixed, that it is staying in one
position.”
He added, however, that
alpha radiation from a pluto
nium triggering device could
cause harm if spread by the
wind.
The eight-engine Jet carried
four H-bombs when it crashed
near the U.S. Air Force base at
Thule. U.S. officials said the
bombs were not armed and
there was no danger of nuclear
explosion.
Officials said the eight-man
crew w'as ordered to bail out
over Greenland after the pilot
radioed, “I am in trouble. I got
a cabin fire.”
Seven men bailed out safely
and were rescued. The eighth
man, the copilot, was killed.
One crewman, suffering a
broken shoulder and frostbite,
was found after spending the
night on the ice.
Hunziker, deputy chief of staff
for material at Stratetic Air
Command headquarters at Of
futt Air Force Base, Neb., was
dispatched with his search team
to find the bombs.
His announcement indicated
some of the bombs may have
broken up in the crash and

Surprise Resignation
HEW Boss Dissatisfied
With Department Budget
WASHINGTON (UPD—John
W. Gardner’s unexpected deci

education and welfare secreta
ry may have been foreshadowed
in a recent speech criticizing
the nation for neglecting its
social needs.
Although it was rumored
before the surprise White House
announcement of his resignation
Thursday that he was dissatis

President Johnson’s Vietnam
policy, Gardner denied he quit
because of disagreements with
the administration.

Clifford Favors
Bomb Halt If Hanoi
Agrees To Coneession
WASHINGTON (UPD—Clark
M. Clifford, President Johnson’s
choice as new defense secreta
ry, say’s he would favor a halt
in the bombing of North
Vietnam if Hanoi agreed to a
“minimal” concession.
Clifford answered questions
before the Senate Armed
Services Committee Thursday
and won unanimous approval by
the committee.
Only confirmation by the full
Senate is needed before the 61-
year-old Washington lawyer and
adviser to three presidents
succeeds Robert S. McNamara
as Pentagon chief.
Clifford told the committee
the bombing “served an ex
tremely useful purpose”, but
that it should be stopped when
Hanoi agrees to a reciprocal
concession.
But he said, Hanoi has
steadfastly refused to make any
concession and “in my opinion
it (bombing) can’t stop with
their present wholly intran
sigent attitude.”
He said such a concession
would be “minimal”—no more
than a promise that the
Communists would not take
advantage of a bombing pause
as they have in the past with
massive resupply operations,
although he would expect them
to carry on normal military
operations after the bombing
was halted and after they
agreed to negotiate.

Capture of the USS Pueblo, an intelligence-gathering ship, by North Korean units in inter
national waters 25 miles off the Korean coast threatened to raise to crisis level a steady
escalation of incidents in Korea during recent months. The seizure come on the heels of
a thwarted attempt by North Korean infiltrators to blow up the presidential palace in Seoul
and assassinate South Korean government leaders. For months, infiltration of Communist
agents has been increasing and shooting incidents have flared along the cease-fire line
between North and South Korea.
