Home Hints
First things first is a good rule
of thumb to use in painting. Be
gin with the ceiling of the room.
Next, walls should be painted
beginning at an upper left hand
corner and working down to the
floor. If you’re left-handed, just
reverse the order. Woodwork
and trim should be painted last.
To prevent tangled apron
strings, put aprons in a nylon
net bag before putting them into
the washer with other items.
Use cotton thread to mend lea
ther gloves. Silk thread can cut
the leather.
Unless you have a good ama
teur plumber in the family, it
is wise to call a professional at
any sign of trouble.
MALE WANTED

retired male for weekend duties.

Sure 4 n’ the Irish Have a Way With the Designs
By HELEN HENNESSY

NEW YORK— (NEA)-Sure
it’s no wonder the Irish are
marchin’ on Paddy’s Day.
It’s the harbinger of spring
and they have a raft of lus
cious spring fashions to show
us.
Collections recently shown
here by the Irish Export
Board range from far-out psy
chedelic printed linen frocks
to elegant evening costumes
and finely tailored town and
travel fashions.
Spring costumes point up
new hues of fabulous Irish
tweeds and hand-woven
wools. There are also lovely
trousseau ensembles for the
Easter bride and new calf
length evening coats and au
thentic Irish hooded cloaks.
Gail of Gailwear introduces
a midi-length black cloque
evening coat and a charming
blue and white cloque street
coat with a hand-woven blue
wool dress.
Pallas debuts a collection of
short cocktail and long eve
ning gowns ‘in creamy white
knitted wool.

costumes in bright, alive col

Jimmy Hourihan has de
signed a most colorful young
group of suits and coats in
Irish wools for both misses
and junior sizes. And Dorothy
Pinnock introduces some con
tinental mini fashions in fine
hand-woven wool in new
spring colors.
For an expensive cruise line
of coats, suits and ensembles
in lush shades of deep rose
and two-toned blue linen,
Perry Mfg. Co. takes the
prize. And Glen Abbey offers
a versatile knitted collection
for cruise and spring in ev
erything from lacy linen knits
to jacquard and flat knit en
sembles.
Henry White, master tailor
of Dublin designers, has a
fine collection of wool coats,
suits and costumes. And, once
again, Sheila Mullally has an
elegant spring collection fea
turing her famous “drawn
thread” fabric.
Raymond Kenna adds cos
tumes with gold threads for a
lavish touch to his new tweed
suits and coats.
These spring-cruise designs
from Ireland should make
fashion news. They’re excit
ing, handsome clothes.

DEAR POLLY — Our large
circulating fan had never been
oiled as I cannot take it apart
nor can I reach the oil holes with
our oil can. It occurred to me
that I might try putting a drop
of oil on a knitting needle. Af
ter several attempts, I succeed
ed in getting the noisy fan oil
ed and quieted. To make sure
there was enough oil on it I also
tried putting a drop of oil in the
slotted end of a long Philips sc
rew driver and this served the
purpose even better. Perhaps a
thin layer of cotton on the end
of the knitting needle would hold
the oil longer while trying to re
ach the oil hole which cannot
be reached with an ordinary oil
can spout. — MRS. E.L.T.
DEAR POLLY — Do you or
any of the readers know how to
clean feather pillows? Mine have
a terrible smell. I do hope to get
some help so they will not have
to be discarded. — BRENDA
DEAR POLLY — Please let
Eva know that her antique pit
cher is doubtless made of nickel
that has been silver - plated.
We are in the business and fa
miliar with such pieces. She
does not get It to shine because
the silver is worn off so it should
be resilvered. The numbers on
the bottom are factory numbers.

DEAR POLLY — I have at
last solved the linen closet pro
blem. When I fold sheets I put
a folded contour sheet inside the
last fold of a matching top sheet.
This way, when I need a set of
sheets, double or single, I al
ways get a top and bottom sheet
without having to unfold other
sheets in the stack. — NOT

for sending thank you notes for

card in a gift, be sure to Include
your address as well as your
name. This is a time-saves that

MRS. G. R.
DEAR GIRLS — May I also
add that it is always well to add
your last name when sending a
note of flowers or a gift. I re
cently received something sign

return address or other Identify

CABLE AND OPENWORK STITCHES appear in this white wool knitted dress by Wool
craft, Ltd., of Ireland. The hand-framed dress (left) has a panel of openwork forming
a diamond motif down the front, banded by two rows of cable stitches. Psychedelic
fashions, Irish style, are creations of brothers William and Brendon O’Reilly of Emor
Designs of Dublin. The printed linen dresses for spring ’6B are shown against the har
bor at Dun Laoghaire. The dog-collar dress with just one shoulder is in an abstract
red and white print. The A-line dress at far right is a design print of purple on orange
in bold flower and foliage motif.
