for practical household experience.
The Board of Directors of the Griffin Area Chapter
for Retarded Children has purchased four acres of land
and two houses on Hamilton boulevard to be used for
a sheltered workshop for retarded teenagers and adults
in Griffin and Spalding County.
The facility will be separate from the Play-To-Learn
School operated by the Griffin Area Chapter at St.
George’s Episcopal Church.
The board of directors has started a drive to raise
money to pay for the land and buildings. A down pay
ment was made on them, but more money is needed to
pay off the indebtedness.
One of the houses on the property will be used for
the sheltered workshop. The other will be set up for
practical household experiences, such as cooking, mak
ing beds and house cleaning.
The facility will be designed to accomodate the stu
dents who graduate from the Play-To-Leam School at
an age of 16 to 18 years old and adults. Two barns on
the property will be converted to provide facilities for
outdoor activities during the summer.
A director will be hired for the “Way To Earn” facil
ity as they were for the Play-To-Learn School at St.
George’s. Each facility will be operated by the same
board of directors, but as separate units.
Plans are being made to have a garden, greenhouse,
kitchen facilities and sewing facilities with necessary
tools and equipment. The board hopes that contracts
can be obtained for sewn and manufactured items with
in the scope of the workshop facilities.
The property has 14 bearing pecan trees on it that
will provide a small income and a job for some of the
people who will attend the workshop.
Funds for operational purposes are obtained by the
Griffin Area Chapter through the Griffin-Spalding
County United Fund; however, funds for the purchase
of land and equipment must come from contributions.
Members of the board of directors are Johnny Bowen,
Ralph Dougherty, Mrs. D. L. Fowler, Mrs. Hope H.
Hammond, Mrs. A. H. Hardin, Willard Kirkland, Paul
Kurtz, Mrs. Joe E. Pope, Mrs. D. D. Smith, Mrs. B. C.
Ward, Mrs. J. M. Whiddon and M. J. Yates, Mrs. Ham
mond is president of the Griffin Area Chapter.
Contributions may be made through any member of
the board of directors or sent to the Griffin Area Chap
ter for Retarded Children, P. O. Box 323, Griffin, Ga.,
30223.
