The Griffin High girls mauled
Therrell 51-27 Tuesday in the
opening round of the Region 3-
AAA tournament at the Sylvan
Gym.
The game wasn’t close after
the first quarter. Coach John
Harris had reserves in the line
up before the final period star
ted.
In other tournament games, R.
E. Lee blew down Washington
53-35 and Turner ripped How
ard, 42-28.
Griffin and Lee will collide
in second round action Thursday
at 4:30 at Sylvan.
The Griffin girls dominated
Therrell from the start.
Coach Harris’ lassies had an
11-7 lead after one period.
Therrell’s troubles worsened
in the second, third and fourth
quarters.
The Atlantans scored only
three points in the second, made
only seven in the third and nine
in the fourth.
Griffin’s sticky defense was led
by Diane Searcy, Pat Jones,
Lynn Cordell and a host of re
serves. fiff
Coach Harris lifted some of
his starters in the third. The en
tire first unit left late in the
fourth.
Martha Dawn, hitting from
every angle, scored 24 points.
Jan Williams scored 16 and Reba
Hall made eight. Sub Jane Luke
scored three.
The boys division of the 3-AAA
tournament started today at the
Sylvan and Fulton gyms.
The Griffin Eagles played
Washington at 6 p.m. at Sylvan.
John Blanchard
Reactivated By
Atlanta Braves
ATLANTA (UPI) — Catcher
John Blanchard, a hard-hitting
reserve during the New York
Yankees’ last string of champ
ionships, by being reactivated by
the Atlanta Braves after a two
year layoff from baseball.
Blanchard is being reinstated
from the restricted list and will
be assigned to the Braves’ AAA
Richmond farm team, according
to Braves vice president Paul
Richards who said Blanchard
“has indicated a desire to re
turn to baseball.’’
Blanchard, who played with
the Yankees from 1959 until
1965, will report to the Braves
spring camp at West Palm
Beach, Fla., March 10 with oth
er minor league pitchers and
catchers.
He was traded to Kansas City
in 1955 and that same year went
to the Milwaukee (now Atlanta)
Braves. Blanchard, who retired
at the close of the 1965 season,
will be 35 next Monday.

sfoot, 40, said he wanted to
spend more time with his
