in 35 seasons.
Look at it scientifically: the
Wildcats are V/ a games ahead
of their nearest contender,
eighth-ranked Vanderbilt, and
their three remaining games,
including one with Vanderbilt,
are in the comforting confines
of their own Memorial Colise
um where any Kentucky loss is
a major upset.
You can’t blame people for
thinking coach Adolph Rupp
must be doing it with mirrors.
Everyone figured Vanderbilt
and defending champion Ten
nessee would be slugging it out
for this year’s SEC title.
After Worst Season
The Wildcats were coming
off the forst season (13-13) in
Rupp’s illustrous 37-year career
and were expected to chalk off
this season as a year for re
building.
After all, Rupp has preached
for years that sophomores are
a risky commodity: that noth
ing takes the place of experi
ence.
However, Rupp had a hunch
that this year’s crop might be
something special. While the
varsity was struggling a year
ago, the freshmen were averag
ing 99 points per game and
posting an 18-2 mark. Rupp
said then, “We may be down at
the moment, but wait until next
year.”
Rupp is the first to concede
that his sophomores came
along faster than even he ex
pected. He had figured on next
year for the conference title
and then, hopefully, his fifth
NCAA championship in 1970.
Those three sophomore start
ers — 6-foot-4 Mike Casey, 6-8
Dan Issel and 6-4 Mike Pratt
— are running 1-2-3 for the
Wildcats in scoring and rebound
ing. “Our sophomores have
really responded time and again
this year,” Rupp said. “We
knew we have something going
when they won up at Michigan
in our opener.”
But Rupp, fearful or jinxing
his chances, isn’t willing to
claim the title yet even though
his Wildcats are 12-3 in the SEC
and 18-4 over-all.
Three Games Left
“We’ve got three more tough
ones to play with Auburn, Ala
bama and Vandy,” Rupp pro
tested, Insisting he won’t rest
easy until Kentucky clinches the
title.
Kentucky was upset by a
single point at Auburn in mid-
January but beat Alabama and
Vanderbilt on the road by eight
and 16 points respectively.
The immediate future holds
little solace for Kentucky op
ponents. The Wildcats’ No. 4
scorer this season, Phil Argento,
Is only a junior and there are
four bright prospects on this
year’s freshman team — Includ
ing 6-foot-10 Steve Schmitt who
could move Issel to a forward
post next year.
This current band of Wildcats
has all the earmarks of some
of Rupp’s former great teams
— speed, size and good shooting.
Georgia, which figured to have
a chance on its home court to
upset Kentucky, found Monday
night if you give the Wildcats
an Inch, they’ll take a mile.
“You just can’t run with that
team,” Georgia coach Ken Rose
mond said sadly after Kentucky
trounced the Bulldogs 106-87.
“We tried to when they got the
lead and they practically ran us
to death.”

BROKEN RUNNER
VILLANOVA, Pa. (UPI)—
Dave Patrick was the crutch of
the Villanova track team this
season and almost learned to
use one.
Patrick ran a 1:49.1 half mile
anchor leg on the Wildcats
record breaking team that
posted a 7:23.7 two mile last
Saturday night. He learned
Monday he has a fractured bone
Briefs
in the third toe of his right foot,
probably incurred six weeks
ago. It’s healing nicely.
