The Griffin Eagles’ first prac
tice game comes up Thursday
and it might catch Coach Don
P'orce without me service of two
of his key performers.
Danny Clark is recovering
from a broken bone in his right
foot, and Wayne Westmoreland
has a neck injury that may side
line him.
Coach Pierce hoped Clark cou
ld play first base.
Although his recovery has
been steady, the injury may not
be Improved enough for him to
play.
If Clark, who was the Eagles’
top catcher a year ago, cannot
play. Coach Pierce will use
Charles Busbin at first base.
Westmoreland's neck injury
has temporarily wrecked Coach
Pierce’s plans for him.
The coach planned to us e
Westmoreland behind the plate,
as the number two pitcher, and
hoped to transfer him to first
base once Clark is able to re
sume his catch duties.
Westmoreland, like Clark, mi
ght play Thursday.
However, if he is no in the
lineup, Coach Pierce will use
David McConnell or Danny To
len behind the plate.
•‘Wayne has been hitting the
ball real good. We hate to lose
him. I hope he’s ready for the
Macon tournament.”
Coach Pierce plans to start
David Gossett at third base.
Gossett is the onry Infielder re
turning from last year’s team.
Rusty Ogletree will be at
shortstop and Joe Grubbs will
play second.
Warren Huddleston or Lamar
Busbin will be in right .rield, Reg
gie Griffin will be in center and
Randy Harrison in left.
Reggie and Randy lettered a
year ago.
The Eagles’ pitching staff is
headed up by Grady Pierce, who
had a tremendous season a year
ago.
Two other prospects are Greg
Vaughn and Mike Rivers.

Eagles Start Final
Week Os Training
The Griffin Eagles started their
final week of spring practice to
day.
The players will be matched
into two equal squads later this
week for the annual intra-squad
game coming up Saturday night
at Memorial Stadium.
The Touchdown Club sponsor
ed game starts at 7:30.
Coach Max Dowis said this
morning that coaches hadn’t gi
ven much consideration to split
ting the squad into two teams.
“That shouldn't be too hard.
TTie two teams rnay be similar
to the squads, who played to a
2-2 tie last Friday in a game
like scrimmage.”
The Eagles will continue the
hard contact drills this week
“maybe not as much in scrim
mages but in group sessions.”
Coach Dowis feels the Eagles
have developed "offensive bal
ance” in spring training.
“If Robison (Donnie) throws
the ball like we think he will,

Houston Wins Chance To
Wipe Out fluke’ Talk
By STU CAMEN
UPI Sports Writer
With each passing game, the
University of Houston reduces
the number of people who
believed the Cougars’ 71-69
victory over UCLA in January
was a fluke.
Houston gets a chance Friday
night to virtually wipe out any
remaining doubters when it
tangles with the Bruins again in
the semifinals of the NCAA
basketball tournament.
The Cougars gained the round
of four last Saturday night by
defeating outmanned Texas
Christian 103-68 to win the
Midwest Regional and add to its
list of believers.
"They’re great, Just great,”
said TCU Coach Johnny Swain
following his club’s 35 point
beating at the hands of the
Cougars. “I thought UCLA
would win last time, but now I
don’t know. I saw Houston
destroy Louisville and do the
same to us and they’re
improving every game.”
Hometown Advantage
Still to be convinced of course
is UCLA which had its 47-game
unbeaten streak stopped at
Houston but will have the
hometown advantage this time
around with the semifinals and
finals to be played in the Los
Angeles Sports Arena, the
former home of the Bruins.
“There is no doubt in our
minds who is the best but we’ll
find out for sure Friday,” said
UCLA Coach Johnny Wooden
after his club easily topped
Santa Clara 87-66 Saturday
night to win the Far West
Regional.
“I just want to be prepared
and I hope we’re ready to
play,” said UCLA’s All-America
Lew Alclndor, who was out
shone in his personal duel with
Player-of-the-Year Elvin Hayes
of Houston in their meeting two
months ago.
While the Houston-UCLA
game attracts the major share
of attention, it is still only a
semifinal contest and the
winner will have to play a game
the following night (and win it)
before being recognized as
national champion.
One Provision
Providing the opposition will
be the winner of Friday night’s
first semifinal contest between
North Carolina and Ohio State.

rebounds in leading the Tar
