Os Laws
Most of us have said from time to time we have so many
laws now that they can’t all be enforced. This really came
home here in Georgia the other day. The Legislature was
considering a "new” law when someone suddenly discover
ed that it has been on the books for 30 years!

Going Rate For
Human Misery
The South Vietnamese government has announced what
it will pay its civilians for losses incurred in the current
Communist offensive. Here’s the going rate for human
tragedy:
To a family whose home was less than 50 per cent de
stroyed: $12.70.
To a family whose home was totally or more than 50
per cent destroyed: $25.40.
For a wounded child: $8.40.
For a dead adult: $33.50.
Well, no one can say that the S2O billion the United
States is spending on the Vietnam war each year is being
squandered on the South Vietnamese people.
At least not on the POOR people.
Chicken Kind
Os Madness
CHILTON COUNTY (Ala.) NEWS
Somebody told “Dear Abby” or somebody that when
they got carried away and lost their temper, whichever
member of the family it was would take an egg and try to
break it— endways—between their fingers and their palm.
It is a tricky trick. Anyway, this was supposed to absorb
all the frustrations and meanness. The very idea of getting
so mad that you’d have to take your vengeance and wrath
out on an egg . . . well, it’s supposed to cool you off and
show you just how foolish you were for getting mad in the
first place.
What they forgot to mention was, if you weren’t too
good at following instructions or if your supplier was a
weak chicken, what do you do with the “mad” you have
when you’re standing there with egg running all down your
arm? One thing’s sure ... that chicken better not be stand
ing anywhere close by!

MY

No Strike
Do you believe that the admin
istration has a right to impose
on the tabor unions a “no-strike”
order? Isn’t this bordering on to
talitarianism? O.T.
Only when the national inter
est is at stake. Our constitution
guarantees the freedom of pri
vate groups to do what they pl
ease, as lonb as it does not
threaten the national safety and
interest.
In this particular case, the
national interest is in jeopardy.
For example, President Johnson
pointed out in a statement to the
Congress, May 4, 1967, that the
railroad strike which seemed
imminent was leaving the na
tion vulnerable.
“If it were permitted, it would
mean a disruption of arms to
our efforts to maintain our com
mitments in Southeast Asia;
food shortages in our cities; gr
eat danger to our economy; a
rising tide of unemployment;
and other dangers which tend to
weaken our nation.”
The point is: the no-strike or
der was not levelled at labor al
one, but also against manage
ment, which too had failed to ne
gotiate.
We all believe in the right of
labor to fair wages, and the right
of management to fair profits,
but when these two become dead
locked and fail to negotiate, the
government’s job is to protect
the interest of the many rather
than the few. . . when the na
tional interest is at stake.

Father, forgive them; for
they know not what they do.
(Luke 23:34)
PRAYER: Dear God, teach us
to forgive our enemies, to love
those who despitefully use us.
Help us to give them love like
that which Thy Son Jesus Christ
bestowed upon His enemies at
the cross of Calvary. In His
name we ask. Amen.
Thought For Today
A thought for the day:
English philosopher Alfred
North Whitehead said, “A
civilized society is exhibiting
the five qualties of truth,
beauty, adventure, art and
peace.”

Surinam, South America,
was originally a British
colony, while New York,
(New Netherlands), was
Dutch, The World Almanac
notes. In 1664 the British
seized New Netherland and,
in 1667, the Dutch captured
Surinam. This swap of
colonies was formalized in
the 1667 Treaty of Breda.
In 1673 the Dutch retook
New York and renamed it
New Orange. It was re
stored to the British in
1674. Surinam, also known
as Dutch Guiana, is still a
Dutch possession.
