LBJ Calls For Unity
In Viet War Effort
By HELEN THOMAS
WASHINGTON (UPD—Meet- '
ing the arguments of his i
Democratic challengers head- i
on, President Johnson has j
called for "a total national ,
effort to win the war” in
Vietnam and to "complete the ,
job” at home.
The Chief Executive appeared ,
to be setting the theme for his .
re-election campaign Monday j
With a rousing, fist-pounding .
speech before the National ,
Farmers Union Convention in
Minneapolis, home territory of
Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy.
He asked Americans “to join
in a program of national :
austerity to insure that our
economy will prosper and that
our fiscal position will be
sound.”
Johnson told the farmers that

"and to affect the safety of
every American home. It
threatens our own security and
it threatens the security of
every allied nation with us.”
“The time has come,” John
son said, “when your president
. .(must) ask you people, and
all the other people of this
nation, to join us in a total
national effort to win the war,
to win the peace, and to
complete the job that must be
done here at home.”
At the same time, 600 miles
to the south, Johnson’s other
Democratic challenger. Sen.
Robert F. Kennedy, was declar
ing before college audiences in
Kansas that the U.S. course in
Vietnam is “bankrupt.”
The New York senator said
the war would go on, “year
after terrible year,” unless
J o h n s o n’s policies were
changed. He said the President
sought “not compromise but
victory” in Vietnam.
Johnson did not mention
Kennedy by name, but his
speech appeared to be in the
form of a reply nonetheless.
“We seek not the victory of
conquest,” he said, “but we do
seek the triumph of justice—the
right of neighbors to be left
alone; the right to determine
for themselves what kind of
government to have.
“We seek that right and we
will—make no mistake about it
—win.”
Hammering at critics of the
administration’s programs, the
President said it was dangerous
for anyone to give Hanoi the
impression that North Vietnam
could win its war in Washing
ton:

Two Georgians
Killed In

WASHINGTON (UPD — The
Defense Department has re
leased the identities of two
more Georgia servicemen killed
in Vietnam.
The dead are Army Sgt. I.C.

Mrs. Carmela E. Itzoe, 5617

(Hanoi leaders) to think for a
moment that they can cause a
ferment here to the point where
the American people will ignore
their leaders and their govern
ment."
Johnson also attacked critics
of U. S. miliary strategy in
Vietnam. In an obvious refer
ence to those who want
American forces to withdraw
into defensive enclaves in South
Vietnam, he said: “We won’t
save lives on the battlefield by
moving in from the mountains
to the cities.”
The President said he did not
want to widen the war but did
not want to "cut and run.”
"We want peace. We’re ready
to meet now—this mlnhte,” he
said.
He warned peace could not
come, however, as long as the
enemy feels he can win
something by undermining U.S.
leadership with propaganda.

ti
By WAYNE G. BRANDSTADT
Q—For my angina my doctor
is giving me white tablets but
my friend, who also has angi
na, is taking pink pills. Do you
think my doctor is giving me
the right medicine?
A—Granted that pink pills
are prettier, both probably con
tain the same drug or closely
related drugs. On the other
hand, your friends disease may
not be identical with yours. If
your tablets prevent or relieve
your attacks, you are getting
the right medicine. Trust your
doctor and don’t be misled by
idle conjectures.
Q—What causes adhesions?
When my gall bladder was re
moved the surgeon found ad
hesions. Could this have been
caused by a motorcycle acci
dent in which I incurred inter
nal injuries?
A— Most adhesions in the ab
dominal cavity are a, growing
together of a cut surface or a
surface inflamed by an infec
tion and an adjacent structure.
Internal injuries could be re
sponsible, but this Is one of

Q—Can anxiety neurosis
cause one to feel weak? What
treatment is best?
A—Anxiety neurosis may
cause a variety of symptoms,
including weakness, breathless
ness, sweating and trembling.
Treatment usually requires a
careful search by a specialist
in nervous diseases for the un
derlying cause. The victim
must then work out for himself
a calmer way of life.
Q—What is Butibel used for?
What are Its side effects?
A—This is a combination of
a barbiturate and belladonna
that is given for heartburn,
peptic ulcer, colitis and other
diseases of the gastrointestinal
tract. The barbiturate is habit
forming and the belladonna
may cause dry mouth and
blurred vision.
Q— My grandson, 9, has taken
many bodies of Chloromycetin.
I recently read that 350 Ameri
cans have died from the effects
of this drug. How dangerous is
it?
A—This valuable antibiotic is
recommended for periods not
exceeding three weeks. Pro
longed treatment is likely to
cause a dangerous reduction in
both red and white blood cell
counts.
Q—Why would a healthy, ac
tive 20-year-old boy feel cold all
the time?
A—This may be caused by
poor circulation or a thyroid
deficiency. The commonest
cause, however, is neurocircu
latory asthenia. This is due to
a chronic state of nervous ten
sion.

‘Stillborn’ Children
Needed By Dr. Sabin
ATLANTA (UPD — Famed
polio vaccine developer Dr.
Albert Sabin said here Monday
that he was looking for stillborn
children and miscarriages of a
highly inbred isolated people in
his efforts to track down vi

Sabin told a meeting of the

been traced to viruses, but that,
as of now, “It is still not pos

malignancy is or is not caused
by a virus.”
Sabin said he asked the Na

Friday to look for an inbred
population, not saying where,
in order to take use tissues

Such tissues would be used to
accept transplants of cancer
