‘Bad Wheels’ Keep
Rocky In The Road
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Sports Writer
SARASOTA, Fla. (UPD —
Rocky Colavito has been
peddled five different times now
and after awhile it starts
getting under a guy’s skin.
People begin asking questions.
What’s the matter with
Colavito?
Is he all washed up? Is he
hard to get along with? Doesn’t
he use the right hair tonic?
What’s wrong? It has to be
something.
Rocky Colavito, dealt again
Tuesday, to the Los Angeles
Dodgers this time by the
Chicago White Sox, suddenly
had a bellyful. He said he
wouldn’t report to the Dodgers.
But then he thought it over a
little and said he would.
“I contemplated retiring,”
said the 34-year-old outfielder,
‘‘But I changed my mind. I’ll
join the Dodgers as soon as I’m
able to move my family back
home to Pennsylvania.”
Colavito asked himself some
questions, too, when they told
him he had been sold to the
Dodgers for something over the
$20,000 waiver price.
Why was he being moved
around so much? He had been
with Cleveland twice, Detroit,
Kansas City and Chicago. Now

they were sending him over to
the other league with Los
Angeles. Why?
“I’m only guessing,” says
Colavito, “but I think the
reason I’ve moved around so
much is because I never had
any real good speed. I honestly
feel that’s the reason.”
Rocky is right. But only
partially. From the moment he
came up to the majors 13 years
ago he already had a label on
him: good hitter but bad
wheels.
He could hit and he could
throw but he couldn’t run a lick
and had limited range, they
said. They also said you’d
forget all about his feet as soon
as you saw him hit those long
home runs over the wall.
When Colavito stopped doing
that, though, he became just
another ballplayer and a 34-
year-old one at that. Maybe that
ran through his mind when he
originally said he wouldn’t
report to the Dodgers.
Rocky put in time with the
Indians and White Sox last
season and didn’t exactly cause
either of them to mistake him
for Carl Yastrzemski. With the
Indians he had a .241 average
and five homers in 63 games;
with the White Sox a .221 figure
and three homers in 60 games.
Home ftns were always a
Colavito trademark. Was there
a reason he totaled only eibht
last year?
“You bet there was,” he says.
“I didn’t play.”
The two clubs can argue and
Rock did play last season. They
can show you where 63 games
and 60 games come out to 123.
“Yeah, but I didn’t get to
play regularly,” argues Colavi
to. “It makes a big difference.”
To a ballplayer it does. Zoilo
Versalles criticizes the Twins
for not playing him enough last
year, yet when you look at the
figures they say he was in 160
contests. What Versalles means
is he was removed from some
of those games.
The fact remains that the
Rocky Colavito of today isn’t
the Rocky Colavito of five years
ago. Sure it hurts him. But he
isn’t the only one who feels that
particular pain.
Ninety-nine out of 100 ball
players suffer when they have
to pass through that period.
They make a lot of jokes about
the twilight of their career. And
the 100th one, who says nearing
the finish line doesn’t bother
him a bit, is lying. To himself
more than anyone else.
Rocky Colavito is beginning
his 14th year in the majors. He
says the biggest thing he
learned in that time is you have
to work hard and never let up.
“Nobody is that good that he
can’t get any better,” says the
Rock.
True enough. But nobody is
hat good, either, that he can
keep going on foreve.

Elvin Hayes
Signs Contract
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UPD—
The San Diego Rockets were
given new impetus towards
their second season of National
Basketball Association competi
tion Wednesday with the signing
of Elvin Hayes, University of
Houston’s college player of the
year.
The expansion club finished
last in the Western Division in
its first season and set an NBA
record for a single season with
67 losses.
Given first choice in the draft,
San Diego picked Hayes who
had led Houston to an
undefeated regular season of
play although the Cougars lost
both of their games last
weekend in the national colle

The aging Boston Celtics,

their fickle fans to Boston
Garden Wednesday night as
they suffered a 109-98 setback
at the hands of Detroit.
The Pistons now hold a 2-1
edge in their best-of-seven
series.
Meanwhile, the defending
champions Philadelphia 76ers
had to struggle through two
overtimes before downing the
youthful New York Knicks 138-
132. The 76ers now lead 2-1 in
the series but the Knicks still
may overtake them to this
tough series—and it was a
costly victory for the 76ers
since Billy Cunningham injured
his wrist.
In the other playoff game, the
Chicago Bulls edged the Los
Angeles Lakers 104-98 but the
Lakers still hold a 2-1 wdge to
the series.
Detroit, trailing 52-48 at
halftime, outscored Boston 33-15
to the third period to break the
game wide open. Dave Bing led
the Pistons with 27 points while
Jimmy Walker added 22 and
Dave Deßusschere 18. Eddie
Miles had 14 points but eight of
them came during a nine-point
surge in the third period when
Detroit was moving in front to
stay.
Philadelphia dominated New
York for the first three periods,
taking an 89-79 lead into the
final quarter. But the hustling
New York team battled back to
tie the game eight times during
the last period and even take
the lead at times.

Hayes said at the press
conference where his signing
was disclosed.
Houston had a 31-0 record

Cougars’ success that carried
them to No. 1 to the UPI
coaches poll and won him the
top honor to the nation.

the second overtime and the
76ers never lost the margin
again.
Flynn Robinson scored 41
points, including 20 in the
second period—the most ever in
one period by a Chicago player

threatened Laker sweep. It was
only the second win for Chicago
in 11 games with the Lakers
this year.
Jerry West scored 32 points
and Elgin Baylor added 29 in
the losing cause for Los

Sam McDowell
Confident Again
By FRED DOWN
UPI Sports Writer
Sam McDowell’s secret is out
—he had lost his confidence.
McDowell sure foiled his
Cleveland Indian teammates
and American League rivals
during the last two seasons
because they agreed almost
unanimously that supreme over
confidence might cost him a
brilliant career.
But the 25-year old left-hander
claimed Wednesday that mana
ger Alvin Dark has restored his
confidence in addition to
smoothing his one-time herky
jerk pitching motion. McDowell
made the comment after
allowing only one hit in six
innings of a 7-3 victory over the
California Angels and Dark
added that Sam could be a 20-
game winner this year.
Other experts made similar
predictions in the winter of 1965
and the summer of 1966. Sam
had looked like the American
League’s answer to Sandy
Koufax in 1965 when he had a
17-11 record and 325 strikeouts
in 273 innings and he won four
straight games, including two

MIAMI (UPD—Florida State
quarterback Ki m Hammond,
who passed the Seminoles to a
7-2-1 record last season, has
signed a two-year contract with
the Miami Dolphins to become
backup man for Bob Griese.
Hammond, a 6-foot-l, 185-

241 passes for 1,991 yards last
season, signed the contract
Wednesday.
The exact amount of the con
tract was not revealed, but it
was estimated to be $27,000 with
a SIO,OOO bonus for the two
years.
“I’m not rich,” Hammond
said, “but the Dolphins treated
me fairly and I’m contented
with the terms.”
Dolphins personnel director
Joe Thomas said Hammond
was “a good prospect. He
played a pro-type offense at
Florida State and will fit right

Clean X-Rays
Then Sam began to complain
about a sore arm. X-rays
disclosed nothing and some
experts labelled Sam a prima
donna unwilling to work hard
enough to make his talents pay
off in stardom. He stumbled
through the 1966 season with a
9-8 record and had only a 13-15
slate in 1967.
McDowell displayed his old
control weakness in walking
five Angels Wednesday but he
whistled third strikes past seven
batters and once again looked
like the McDowell of 1965. Vic
Davalillo’s two-run double and
Tommy Harper’s homer were
the big blows for the Indians,
who hope to move up a notch or
two this season from their
eighth-place finish of 1967.
Felix Millan’s two-run single
triggered a five-run eighth
inning rally that enabled the
Atlanta Braves to beat the
Houston Astros 5-3 for their
"seventh victory in eight games.
Phil Niekro, the National
Leabue’s ERA leader in 1967,
pitched 'the first seven innings
for the Braves and allowed two
runs. Denny Lemaster had shut
out the Braves for seven innings
before the big rally.
Dodgers Lose
Chris Short pitched a six
hitter for seven innings and
Gary Wagner finished up in the
Philadelphia Phillies’ 4-0
triumph over the Los Angeles
Dodgers. A walk and singles by
Cookie Rojas, John Callison,
Tony Gonzalez and Bill White
sent the Phillies off to a 3-0 lead
in the first toning.
The San Francisco Giants
routed Ken Holtzman to two
innings, with the aid of a pair of
two-run doubles by Willie
McCovey, and went on to down
the Chicabo Cubs 10-6. Mike
McCormick was staked to an
early 10-2 lead and went the
distance despite four Cub runs
in the last two innings.
Harmon Killebrew hit his
fourth homer of the spring to
give the Minnesota Twins a 1-0
11-tontog victory over the
Baltimore Orioles. Jim Merritt,
Al Worthington, Ron Perranoski
and Jim Roland starred on the
mound for the Twins and Bruce
Howerd, Dave Leonhard, Moe
Drabowsky and Gene Brabender
were effective for the Orioles.
Gibson In Shape
The St. Louis Cardinals ripped
Joe Horlen and Jack Fisher for
17 hits, including Lou Brock’s
two-run homer, to defeat the
Chicago White Sox 8-2. Bob
Gibson allowed two runs and
five hits to five innings to win
his third straight game of the
spring for the Cardinals.
Mickey Mantle’s double high
lighted a three-run first-toning
rally which sparked the New
York Yankees to a 4-2 win over
the Boston Red Sox; John
Donaldson drove in two runs
with a pair of singles as the
Oakland Athletics beat the
Detroit Tigers 4-2 and homers
by Hal McCrae and Lee May
led the Cincinnati Reds past the
New York Mets 5-4.
