Bombers Hit Khe Sanh Area

SAIGON (UPI) — American
bombers today attacked the
North Vietnamese surrounding
Khe Sanh. It may have been the
start of a long-awaited allied
offensive against the Commu
nists near the Marine fort on
South Vietnam’s northern fron
tier.
Air Force 852 Stratofortres
ses and smaller fighter-bombers
combined in the assault against
the 16,000 North Vietnamese
reported by Allied Intelligence
to be ringing the Leatherneck
base.
Military spokesmen In Saigon
disclosed Tuesday that an allied
operation has begun In the area,
but details of the drive were
classified as secret.
Decrease In Shelling
North Vietnamese troops laid
siege to Khe Sanh Jan. 21.
Constant shelling has killed

1 U.S. spokesmen said the
eight - engine Stratofortresses
twice today pounded the Com
munist south and west of Khe
Sanh. The smaller Air Force
fighter-bombers flew 32 mis
sions against the Communists.
More 852 missions struck
three times Tuesday night to
the southeast of Khe Sanh,
smashing Communist positions
in the area of Hue. The Hue
strikes were considered especi
ally Important. U.S. Intelligence
has reported about 22,000
Communist troops within a
day’s march from the former
imperial capital that took such
a beating In February’s Com-
11 munist offensive against South
, Vietnam’s cities.

i bombing to below the 20th
parallel. Navy jets hit just
below the limit line set by the
President In his new bid for
Vietnam peace talks.
The jets were striking the
North Vietnamese supply lines
feeding the Communist armies
stretched along the border from
Khe Sanh, near the Laos
Border, to the South China Sea,
U.S. spokesmen said.
In other developments, a
company of U.S. Army 25th
Infantry Division killed 10
guerrillas In a fight Tuesday 12
miles north of Saigon. Three
1 Americans were wounded. It
1 was the latest action In the th
ree-week-old 50-battalion allied
drive to rid the Saigon area of
its Communist menace.
i Allied spokesmen said the
’ largest allied drive of the war,
i beginning March 11, has killed
[ 2,399 Communists in and around
i Saigon. Allied losses have been
243 men killed Including 96
Americans and 1,123 wounded
Including 77 Americans.
American spokesmen also
announced that last week the
Viet Cong killed 67 Vietnamese
civilians, wounded 43 and
kidnaped 234 more. '
