WARTIME CONTROLS — Sen.

idential nomination, tells a
business luncheon in Chicago
that the nation must be pre
pared to move toward war
time economic controls if
Vietnam costs continue up.
Tobacco, Eggs
Buried With
97 Georgia Hogs
BLACKSHEAR, Ga. (UPD —
Ninety-seven hogs lay buried to
day with about 700 pounds of
tobacco and eggs after a
slaughter and burial, the fourth
in recent weeks to protest mark
et prices for pork.
Farmers from seven south
Georgia counties decided to
throw in the tobacco and about
97 dozen crated eggs Tuesday
after farmers shot and killed
almost 100 hogs at a farm seven
miles northwest of here. A
panda teddy bear tagged “Mr.
Swift,” representing the farm
ers’ alleged protagonist, Swift
& Co., was hung in effigy.
In a pattern repeated in inci
dents that have sacrificed a
total of 332 hogs, members of
the National Farmers Organiza
tion (NFO) gathered to shoot
their hogs with rifles, and bull
doze them into a trench. Tues
day night’s protest took on an
added dimension with the waste
of tobacco and eggs.
Farmers in south Georgia re
cently called on representatives
of Swift, the world’s largest
meat products company, to
meet to discuss lowered prices
for their hogs, but no such
“open debate” has occurred.
Members of the NFO contend
that farmers are getting lower
prices for farm products and
“profit-wise, we’re giving them
away,” according to one of
ficial.
GEA After
Rep. Floyd
TRION, Ga. (UPI) — Rep.
James “Sloppy” Floyd cf Trion,
incensed by criticism from the
Georgia Education Association
president said today he was
“one of the best frienls to edu
cation in the state of Georgia.”
Floyd, who, as chairman of
the House Appropriations Com
mittee opposed full $558 per
year teacher salary increases,
accused Dr. Franklin Shumake
of “shocking, irresponsible, un
called for tactics.’
Shumake had said members
of the teachers organiza
tion would be working against
him (the Trion representative)
when he sought reelection.
Floyd responded Tuesday by
saying that Shumake had no
classroom teaching experience
in Georgia public schools, and
that he did not reflect the sen
timents of state teachers.
Floyd said he doesn’t intend
“to take threats of this nature
from Dr. Shumake or any other
fndividual who goes off half
cocked when other people in
the education field will say that
I am one of the best friends to
education in the state of Geor
gia.”
