REBELLION CONTINUES
PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria
(UPl)—Rebel Biafrian troops
damaged or sank eight boats
ferrying troops of the federal
government across the Niger
River to attack the town of
Onitsha, according to reports
reaching here Monday. The
Federal government claimed it
had captured the town last
week but Biafran leaders said it
was still in their hands.

a faculty member represented
the school at the Georgia Youth
Temperance Educational rally
in Macon today.
They are students Reba J. Hall
and Ted Godard and Home Ec
teacher Mrs. Bess Hoskins.
The meeting was held at the
Central Methodist Church Youth
Center.

Third Suspect In
Smokes Theft Held
ATLANTA (UPI) — The third
suspect in the March theft of
831 cases of cigarettes is under
arrest, FBI officials said Fri
day.
The cigarettes, en route from
Reidsville, N.C., to Birminghg
ham, Ala., were stolen from a
trailer in a parking lot in At
lanta. The FBI entered the case
because the shipment was in
volved in interstate commerce.
The suspect arrested at Mari
etta Friday was identified as
William Bryon Lee, 40, a used
car salesman.
Lee was taken before U. S.
Commissioner Frank A. Holden,
who set bond at SIO,OOO.
Charges were conspiracy and
theft from an interstate ship
ment.

Three Fugitives
Sought In Escape
HOMERVILLE, Ga. (UPI) —
Police in South Georgia are con
tinuing the search for three fug
itives who escaped from Clinch
County jail Thursday night.
Two of the men, both Ne
groes, had just been caught
Sunday in Homerville after a
previous escape from Raiford,
Fla., State Prison.
The two Florida fugitives
were identified as John Eugene
Reaves, 20, and Johnny Sloan,
21. The third man, who was
described as white and weigh
ing around 200 pounds, is Wil
liam Franklin Nations, 39, of
Bainbridge, Ga.

WASHINGTON (UPI) — The
Defense Department Friday list
ed a Georgia serviceman among
those killed in Vietnam combat.
He is Army Spec. 4 Danny J.
Richardson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Giles Richardson of Cov

the rural borough are to live
rent free for one week this
year, it was reported.
The council made this deci
sion because it has 53 rent
weeks listed instead of the
normal 52. A spokesman said
the council had not budgeted for
the extra revenue.

Man Sentenced
To Year Or To
Pay SSOO Fine
A Macon man was sentenced
to a year in prison or a SSOO fine
Friday by Judge Hugh Sosebee
ot the Flint Judicial Circuit who
was sitting in for Griffin Judic
ial Circuit Judge John H. McGe
hee.
Howard W. McDaniel, 33, of
444 Grady street, Macon, was
sentenced on charges of point
ing a pistol at another, assault
with intent to murder, carrying
a pistol without a license, carry
ing a concealed weapon and as
sault and battery.
Judge Sosebee sentenced Mc-
Daniel to one year in prison on
each charge with the terms to
run concurrently or to pay a SIOO
fine on each charge.
McDaniel entered a plea be
fore Judge Sosebee.

In observance of National Lib
rary Week, April 21-27, the Haw
kes Library is sponsoring an es
say contest for students taking
senior English in the Griffin-Sp
alding School System. Fifteen
dollars will be awarded for the
first place essay. Second and
third place winners will each re
ceive a copy of Webster’s Col
legiate Dictionary. The theme
is “Our Public Library-1968.’’

phy has announced that Miss
Marjorie McKenzie, Coordina
tor for School and Children’s
Services at the library, will be
local professional chairman for
National Library Week. Miss
Bertha Turner, Griffin High Sc
hool, and L. C. Stringer, Fair

with Miss McKenzie and other
members of her committee on
the essay contest.

Named To
ATMI Committee
J. M. Cheatham, president of
Dundee Mills, Griffin, has been
named to the Executive Commit
tee of the American Textile
Manufacturers Institute.
Harold W. Whitcomb, chair
man of the board of Fieldcrest
Mills, Inc., Eden, N.C., was el
ected president. New officers of
the Institute will take office on
Oct. 1.
They were elected at the an
nual meeting this week in Phoe
nix, Ariz.
Mrs. Smart Dies
At Her Home
Mrs. Virginia Weldon Smart of
1118 Pine Valley road, died this
morning at her home. She was
the wife of Mr. W.W.G. Smart,
Jr.
She was a native of Richmond,
Va., and had made her home in
Griffin for the past three years.
She was a graduate of East Ca
rolina College and received her
MS degree from North Carolina
State University.
She was a member of the Fir
st Baptist Church and a the Joy
Sunday School Class.
In addition to her husband, she
is survived by a brother, C. T.
Weldon of Warrenton, N.C.

ced by Pittman-Rawls Funeral

enshrined in Staturary Hall in
the national Capitol. Persons
