Mrs. Singley,94,
Dies In Jackson
JACKSON — Mrs. Jennie Mc-
Clure Singley, 94. of Route one,
Jackson, widow of Mr. William
Henry Singley, died Saturday
afternoon at the Sylvan Grove
Hospital in Jackson after an ex
tended illness.
A lifelong resident of Butts
County, Mrs. Singley had been a
member of the Macedonia Bap
tist Church for 81 years.
She is survived by five daugh
ters. Mrs. T. J. Thaxton, Mrs.
B. F. Hamlin. Miss Nellie Sing
ley, Mrs. Bennis Cook, all of
Jackson, and Mrs. Odell Cleve
land of Locust Grove; three sons,
Bernard Singley, Leonard Sing
ley and Elwood Singley, all of
Jackson; 25 grandchildren and
23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Tuesday afternoon at 4
o'clock from the Macedonia
Baptist Church. The Rev. R. W.
Jenkins, Dr. D. V. Cason, the
Rev. Bill Thomas, the Rev. E. A.
McCoy and the Rev. Wiley Ca
meron will officiate. Burial will
be in the church cemetery. Mrs.
Singley's body will remain at
Haisten Funeral Home in Jack
eon until carried to the church
30 minutes prior to the funeral
hour.

Dr. Higgins Dies;
Peanut Authority
Dr. Bascombe Britt Higgins of
511 South High street suffered a
stroke Saturday morning at his
residence and died a short time
later at the’ Griffin-Spalding Co
unty Hospital.
Dr. Higgins was a botanist,
who was associated with the Ge
orgia Experiment Station here
for 40 years. He retired in 1955.
He was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church.
A native of Higgins, N.C., he
was the son of the late Thomas
Gaston Higgins and the late Mrs.
Elizabeth Scronce Higgins. Dr.
Higgins received his B.S. degree
from North Carolina State
University and his Ph.D. de
gree from Cornell University at
Ithaca, N.Y.

WASHINGTON — DC. — A
corps of Teachers-In-Politics Sp
ecialists met this weekend at the
National Education Association
here to kickoff a new program
for teachers and teacher organ
izations needing practical help
in solving political problems in
their states and local communi
ties.
Among the TIP Specialists was
Mrs. Thelma F. Davis, Reading
teacher, from Griffin, Georgia.
This reserve corps of people
actively engaged in practical po
litics as well as in education has
been recruited by the NEA’s Cit
izenship Committee to travel ar
ound the country and to be "on
call” when teachers send out an
SOS.
Twenty-three TIP Specialists
are ready to move into commu
nities to give teachers a helping
hand with such problems as
bond issues, or help plan strat
egy when teachers, pressing for
educational reform, face an un
sympathetic mayor, governor, or
legislator.

Killed By
High Voltage
JACKSON — Mr. Tom King
man Carmichael, 17, of 311 Cov
ington street, Jackson, was kill
ed instantly Saturday night when
he came in contact with a high
voltage wire. Mr. Carmichael
stepped from his automobile to
assist some people whose auto
mobile had struck a power pole
between Forsyth and Indian Sp
rings.
He was the son of Mrs. Mar
garet Drake of Jackson and
Bert J. Carmichael of Atlanta.
Mr. Carmichael, a lifelong resi
dent of Jackson, was a member
of the graduating class of 1968 at
Jackson High School. At the
time of his death he was a mem
ber of the freshman class at Gor
don Military College in Barnes
ville. He was a member of t h e
Jackson Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents he is
survived by a sister, Miss Mary
Claire Carmichael of Jackson;
one brother, Capt. Bert J. Car
michael, Jr., chaplain, US Ar
my; grandparents, Mrs. Sylvia
Carmichael of Atlanta and Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Silas of Jackson
ville, Fla.
Funeral services were conduc
ted this afternoon at 4 o’clock
from the Jackson Methodist
Church. The Rev. Ray Dunahoo
and the Rev. David Black offic
iated and burial was in the
Jackson cemetery. Haisten Fu
neral Home of Jackson was in
charge of plans.

Barnesville Dies
BARNESVILLE — Mr. Benja
min Franklin Harrison, Sr., of
531 Greenwood street, Barnes
ville, died unexpectedly at h i s
residence this morning.
He was born in Pike County,
living in Lamar County for a
number of years. He was a mem
ber of the Church of the Nazar
ene in Barnesville and a retired
employe of the William Carter
Company.
Mr. Harrison Is survived by
his wife, Mrs. Lucy Spillers Har.
rison; two daughters, Miss Sa
rah Harrison and Miss Mary
Harrison, all of Barnesville; one
son, Sgt. Benjamin Franklin Har
ris, Jr., USAF; and several nie
ces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held
Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock
from the Church of the Nazar
ene in Barnesville. The Rev.
Lewis B. Whetstone and the Rev.
J. U. Little will officiate. Burial
will follow in the Greenwood ce
metery. Mr. Harrison's body
will remain at Hubbard Fun
eral Home until carried to t h e
church to lie in state 30 minutes
prior to the funeral hour.

Typewriter
From School
Burglars broke into Annie
Shockley Elementary School over
the weekend and stole an Under
wood typewriter, police said.
Officers said the burglars en
tered the building through a win
dow on the west side of the build
ing.

BAINBRIDGE, N.Y. (UPD—
State police searched today for
thieves who made off with the
white outhouse belonging to the
United Community Social Club.
Club officials said it had a
half moon on the door and was
valued at $25. Police said the
thieves "must have been
desperate."
