Concord Has Complete Sewerage, Water Facilities
Concord has become the first
city In Pike County to provide
complete sewerage and water
facilities to residents of the
town.
The sewerage installation and
extension of water lines have
been completed and customers
are being tied onto the new lin
es.
The projects were financed
through a grant and loan from
the Farmers Home Administra
tion of the U. S. Department of
Agriculture. The loan and grant
were coordinated through the
Griffin office which is managed
by Ike Wheeless.
The grant was for $129,000 and
the loan for $130,000. The loan
will be repaid In 30 years. The
first payment was made this
year. An additional loan of $40,-
000 was made for extension of
the city’s water mains.
Preliminary planning for the
Concord projects were handled

J. B. McCrary Co., Inc. was
awarded contracts on July 7,
1967 for installation of the sew
erage system and construction of
two oxidation ponds. The con
tract for the sewerage system
was for $115,541.10 and the con
tract for oxidation pond number
one for $56,211.25 and the con
tractor for oxidation pond num
ber two for $15,110.
Jan R. Smith Construction
Co. was awarded the contract
for extension of the water ma
ins. It was let on July 27, 1967.
The project Included approxi
mately 20,090 feet of water ma
ins and 17 additional fire plugs.
It also Included a water stor
age basin and purifying station.
The contract for the water ex
tension project was for $69,880.
Fifty-five percent of the users
are now connected to the sewer,
age system and others are being
serviced as rapidly as possible.
The proposals and specifica
tions were initiated in 1966 by
the City of Concord. A water and
sewer plan for Pike County, in
cluding Concord, was submitted
to the Chattahoochee-Flint Area
Planning and Development Com
mission by Mayes, Suddeath and
Etheridge, Inc.
Aid was given by Ike Wheeless
in preparing the application for
the loan and grant from the Far
mers Home Administration.
Concord’s original water sys
tem was installed under a loan
obtained through the Works Pro
gress Administration in 1938. It
was paid off in 1965.
City officials of Concord in 1966
when the plans are initiated for
the expansion of the water lines
and installation of sewerage fa
cilities were: Fred S. Lee, May
or; R. H. Strickland, Jr., clerk
and treasurer; H. E. Marshall,
R. E. Sharpe, A. P. Dunn and H.
D. Storey, councilmen.

Mental Patient Faces
Charges In Americus
AMERICUS, Ga. (UPI) — Po
lice said today they planned to
lodge charges of assault with in
tent to murder against an es
caped Pennsylvania mental pa
tient who held off officers with
a shotgun barrage for two hours
Tuesday.
The man, identified as John
Perdue, 48, slashed his own
throat as police moved in on his
barricaded house. He was hos
pitalized in serious condition.
Two officers also were wound
ed in the shooting.
Lt. W. T. Beauchamp, 54, of
the Georgia Bureau of Inves
tigation, was hospitalized in se
rious condition and Sgt. Lyn
wood McClung of the Americus
police department was listed in
good condition.
According to police, Perdue
escaped from the Embryville

shooting, was allowed to enter
the dwelling to take out the
couple’s 2 - year -old baby.
None of the couple’s four chil
(dren was hurt.
ARMS SHIPMENT
KHARTOUM (UPD—Military
sources in the Sudan said
Monday the first segment of a
Soviet shipment of fighter
planes, tanks, anti - aircraft
guns, artillery and radar
systems will arrive in Port
Sudan next week and go on
display next month. Sudan
concluded an arms agreement
with the Soviets last week.
DISEASE SPREADS
TOKYO (UPD—Health offi
cials Monday said Tokyo was
infested with encephalitis, the
so - called sleeping sickness.
They made the announcement
after 61.5 per cent of the hogs
in suburban slaughterhouses
were found Infected with the
disease. The health ministry
said 156 persons have died of
the disease this year In Tokyo.
SOLDIERS DROWN
NEW DELHI, India (UPD—A
search party today probed the
rapids of the Kall River in
northern Uttar Pradesh state
today for 28 soldiers believed
killed when their vehicle
plunged into the river Monday.
No bodies were found.
