ATLANTA (UPD—The South
is noted for its hospitality but
the San Francisco Warriors will
tell you otherwise.
The Atlanta Hawks, trans

third period and then cashed in
on a pair of free throws by Zel
mo Beaty and a field goal by
Joe Caldwell in the final 38

The triumph ended a two
game Atlanta losing streak and
sent the Warriors, making their
first visit to the South, down to
its third straight loss.
Beaty’s free throws in the
waning seconds moved the
Hawks into a 107-104 lead and
Caldwell’s driving layup put the
game out of reach as San Fran

free throw.
Jeff Mullins of San Francisco

Russell Wins,
‘Stilt’ Loses
By United Press International
The names are on the uniform
may change but the story in the
National Basketball Association
remains the same: Bill Russell
wins and Wilt Chamberlain
loses.
When Chamberlain decided to
pick up his act and go to Los
Angeles where Jack Kent Cooke
was waiting with arms full of
money, the Lakers were sup
posed to tear the NBA apart.
Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor
aiTti Jerry West on the same
team, the Lakers were immedi
ately made overwhelming favo
rites to win all the honors.
But somehow, it Isn’t working
out that way. With the season
eight games old, the Lakers are
just another .500 club.
And the old Boston Celtics,
who are supposed to fall apart,
continue to creak along to
victories behind their aging
leader, Russell.
Russell blocked 14 shots and
grabbed 30 rebounds Friday
night as the Celtics blasted the
Philadelphia 76ers 118-99 to
boost their record to 5-2.
Meanwhile, the Lakers fell to 4-
4 as they were beaten by the
Chicago Bulls 114-101 despite a
29-point effort by Chamberlain.

Atlanta In
New Soccer
League
CHICAGO (UPD—Eight North
American Soccer League teams
agreed Friday to sponsor a
league team to play Internation
al matches. But It probably will
be the only professional soccer
team the league would support
next year.
The NASL voted Friday to
halt competition between the *
league’s 17 teams for now, but
it adopted a plan which would
spawn a representative team to
play the likes of the Moscow
Dynamos, Real Madrid, Man
chester United and Tottenham
Hotspurs.
Team representatives from
Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland,
Dallas, Kansas City, Oakland,
St. Louis and Washington
agreed to support the league
team as well as use part of
their funds to promote soccer in
their communities.
The plan, which would find the
league team facing international
competition in each participating
city at least three times a year,
is subject to approval by the
U. S. Soccer Football Associa
tion and the Canadian Soccer
Football Association, both mem
bers of the International Sccer
Federation.
NASL teams yet to join the
three-year plan were Boston,
Vancouver, Detroit, Chicago,
Houston, San Diego, Toronto,
Los Angeles and New York.
