Lowly Steelers
Lower Falcons
By DAVID M. MOFFIT

ATLANTA (UPl)—Pittsburgh
flanker Roy Jefferson and
Atlanta Coach Norm Van
Brocklin pretty well summed up
the Steelers' 41-21 victory over
the Falcons Sunday with their '
contrasting statements.
"It was my greatest game.” 1
said Jefferson, who became the
first NFL player In five years 1
to catch four touchdown passes I
in a game. I
“We played terrible,” said
Van Brocklin who put six i
regulars on waivers earlier in
the week In an effort to shake 1
up the Falcons "and snap them i

those Falcons Van Brocklin cut.
He got the other two off Floyd
Hudlow who also was called up
last week.
"We had a hunch that Atlanta
might be vulnerable there,”
Jefferson said. "But I never
dreamed of scoring four times,
no matter who was defending
against me.”
Van Brocklin, who appeared
to take the defeat better than
had been expected, said "We
knew they would test Suchy
...but the jury Is still out, he
deserves another look.”
The record for touchdown
passes caught in one NFL game
is five, set by Bob Shaw of the
then Chicago Cardinals against
Baltimore 18 years ago. Jeffer
son became the eighth player to
catch four but the first since
Mike Ditka of the Bears caught
that many against the Rams in
1963.
Georgia Bulldogs kept this past
weekend from being a total ,
disaster for football fans in the :
Peach State.
Georgia’s comeback produced
a 10-10 tie with the offensive
minded Houston Cougars —a
tie that was welcome when you
consider the 7th-ranked Bull- i
dogs were behind 10-0 with 12 :
minutes left to play and that
the 13th-ranked Cougars rolled
up 532 yards.
The state’s other major teams
were nowhere near as fortunate.
Georgia Tech, trailing 40-14 in
the final period, was upset 46- '
30 by Duke and the professional
Atlanta Falcons, down 34-0 with 1
19 minutes left to play, were
beaten 41-21 by Pittsburgh.
The tie, which left Georgia
(5-0-2) unbeaten, came on a 38-
yard field goal by Jim McCul
lough with only 12 seconds left
to play. The Bulldogs had held
for downs at their own 9 yard
line with barely two minutes
left and then marched to the
Houston 22 as time was running
out.
Had A Few Shakes
"I guess I had a few shakes,” ,
Swat
41-21
Incidentally, Jefferson’s 11
receptions for 199 yards were
both high so far this season.
The Atlanta-Pittsburgh game
was rated a tossup, first time in
their three years the Falcons
had ever been in that position.
But the Steelers built up a 34-
0 lead before the Falcons finally
got moving during the closing 19
minutes.
The Steelers scored twice in
the first period, on passes of 27
and 61 yards from quarterback
Dick Shiner to Jefferson; added
another touchdown with 22
seconds to go in the second
period when Don Shy climaxed
an 89-yard march with a 3-yard
run; and then got two gift
touchdowns early in the third
period, one of those on a shiner
to-Jefferson pass.
McCullough, a Junior from Ma
con, Ga., said afterwards. "But,
you’ve got to think positively if
you’re going to do any good. I
began to veer to the right—but
I wasn’t worried.”
A record crowd of 59,381
rocked Sanford Stadium when
an official threw up his arms,
signifying McCullough’s kick
was true.
For three periods the crowd
had set in mute awe as Hous
ton, the nation’s No. 1 offensive
team, moved the ball almost at
will. Paul Gipson, rated before
hand by Georgia coach Vince
Dooley as the equal of Southern
Cal’s O. J. Simpson, rushed for
230 yards himself.
Said Dooley of Houston,
"There’s no doubt they’re the
best offensive team around, I
can’t complain about that tie.
I’m really proud of the way our
hoys brought the ball down the
field at the end.”
Carson Not Proud
But Georgia Tech coach Bud
Carson wasn’t proud of his Yel
low Jackets.
“This must have been the
worst defensive team I’ve ever
been around,” Carson said bit
terly after Duke got its most
points in 36 games against
Tech. "We won’t be this bad
again — ever. I know we have
problems but I can’t believe
we can’t solve them.”
This coming weekend, Geor
gia Tech, now 4-3 and not likely
to have a winning season with
Notre Dame and Georgia still
ahead, will be host to Navy
(1-6) which suffered a 45-14 loss
to Notre Dame. Georgia goes to
Jacksonville, Fla., to play the
Florida Gators (4-2-1) in a game
that lost a lot of its meaning
when the faltering Gators lost
24-13 to Auburn, Georgia’s op
;x>nent the following week.
As for the Falcons (1-7), they
get the honor of playing host to
the Los Angeles Rams (7-1)
who’ve already beaten them
(27-14) once this season.

Auburn Faces Its
Moment Os Truth
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI)-Unranked
Auburn, hanging on to a share
of the Southeastern Conference
lead since late September and
at last on top alone, must face
its moment of truth.
Although Auburn is the only
SEC team which has won all its
league battles so far, the Tigers
have sth-ranked Tennessee, 7th
ranked Georgia and 18th-ranked
Alabama ahead. There’s little
chance they can beat all three.
The Tigers grabbed the SEC
lead Saturday by beating once
favored, now-stumbling Florida
24-13 while sophomore quarter
back Archie Manning led
Mississippi to a come-from-be
hind 27-24 victory over last
week’s co-leader, Louisiana St
ate.
As the race now stands,
Georgia, which came from
behind in the final seconds to
tie offensive minded Houston 10-
10. and Tennessee, which routed
UCLA 42-18, must be considered
the co-favorltes with Ole Miss
rated an outside chance.
Something could give this
week. Alabama plays LSU and
Auburn plays Tennessee in a
day night doubleheader at Bir
mingham’s Legion Field and
Georgia plays Florida in the
Gator Bowl at Jacksonville.
As for the other SEC teams
this coming weekend, Ole Miss
hosts unbeaten Chattanooga, the
nation’s No. 3 small college
team; Mississippi State hosts
aerial-minded Florida State;
and Kentucky hosts Vanderbilt.
Saturday, Alabama beat Mis
sissippi State 20-13, Kentucky
beat West Virginia 35-16, and
Vanderbilt beat Tulane 21-7 in a
game that counts in the SEC
standings.

Auburn quarterback Loran
Carter, last year’s SEC total
offense champ, had a field day
against Florida—completing 17
of 30 passes for 220 yards and
three touchdowns.
But offensive honors this
weekend went to Manning.
Returning to action after being
injured the previous week, the
sensational soph passed for 345
yards and ran for 17 more to
take over the league’s
total offense lead with 1,354
yards. Close on his heels is
Mississippi St a t e’s Tommy
Pharr with 1,339 yards after
gaining 205 in a losing effort
against Alabama.
Manning, already named SEC
offense player of the week
twice, threw two touchdown
passes and ran for another
against a well-regarded LSU
defense. He threw a ' 9-yard
touchdown pass to Steve Hind
man with 55 seconds left to play
to give the Rebels their upset
win.

Georgia cut it finer than that;

the clock. Houston, paced by
Paul Gipson who ran for 230
