Archie Manning Named
SEC Offensive Player
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — Playing
against Louisiana State on a
Saturday night in Baton Rouge
is tough enough for a veteran
in the pink of condition.
But Archie Manning, Missis
sippi’s 19-year-old sophomore
quarterback, was still recover
ing from bruises which side
lined him a week earlier when
he started this past Saturday
night against the Bengal*.
If he hurt, Manning didn’t
show it as he led the Rebels to
a 27-24 upset over LSU. He com
pleted 24 of 40 passes for 345
yards and added another 17 on
the ground — passing for two
touchdowns, including the one
that brought the Rebels from
behind in the closing minute,
and scoring another himself.
For this sensational perform
ance, Manning, from Drew,
Miss., today was named South
eastern Conference offense play
er of the week for the third
time this season by United
Press International.
Trailed 17-3
Mississippi, a 6-point under
dog, was trailing 17-3 in the
second period but Manning cut
that to 17-10 at halftime with a
65-yard touchdown pass and the
Rebels caught up, at 17-all. in
the third period on Manning’s
two yard run.
The Rebels were trailing
again, 24-20, with 3:37 left in
the game when Manning led
them on a 76-yard march that
Included passes for 17, 23, 21,
13 and 9 yards—the last for a
touchdown with 55 seconds re
maining.
Manning’s 362 yard total
vaulted him into the SEC’s total
offense lead with 1,354 yards—
-15 more than previous leader
Tommy Pharr of Mississippi
State who had 205 yards In a
20-13 loss to Alabama.
There were other offensive
heroes in the SEC this past
weekend, but none with Man
ning’s credentials.
Carter Led Auburn
Auburn quarterback Loran
Carter passed for three touch
downs and 220 yards to lead the
Tigers to a 24-13 victory over
Florida and into first place in
the Southeastern Conference
race.
Sophomore quarterback Mike
Cavan of Georgia hit on 16 of
26 passes for 185 yards and a
touchdown In the Bulldogs’ 10-10
tie with Houston.
Quarterback Bubba Wyche of
Tennessee completed 17 of 24
passes in the Vols' 42-18 victory
over UCLA.
And all-purpose back Dicky
Lyons of Kentucky, the defend
ing SEC scoring champ, tallied
his 10th and 11th touchdowns of
the season In the Wildcats’ 35-16
victory over West Virginia.
