Reimbursement
Deadline Dec. 31
Dec. 31, 1968 is the deadline for
filing for reimbursement from
Medicare for doctor bills you in
curred from October, 1966 throu
gh September, 1967. If you have
some bills dated during this per
iod of time be sure to file a el
emi on them before the end of
the year. For help in filing, see
your Social Security office at 435
West Solomon street in Griffin.
Q. After my father’s death this
year I found that he had paid se
veral substantial doctor bills
some time ago and had never fi
led a Medicare claim on them.
Can anything be done about this
now? L.M., Griffin.
A. If these bills represented
services after September 30,
1966, a claim may still be filed.
But hurry! The deadline for fil
ing claims for services from Oct.
1, 1966 through Sept. 30, 1967
is the last day of this year. Che
ck with your Social Security
office to find out who should file
the claim, how to file it, etc.
Q. When my father died two
years ago, Social Security paid
a lump-sum burial payment in
addition to paying monthly che
cks to my mother. My mother
died last month and I am told
there will be no burial payment.
Why? S.M., Griffin.
A. A lump-sum death (burial
payment is made only if the
deceased person is “insured” for
Social Security benefits because
of his or her own work. Appar
ently your mother had not work-

Q. I began getting my Social

working through May. I made

: ed. A friend told me I would
i have to pay back most of my
I checks because I made more
| than $1,680. Is this true? A.P.,
Griffin.
A. No. You will be due some of
your checks even though you
■ made over $1,680 during 1968.
You will be due a check for each
month in which you neither ear
ned more than $l4O in wages nor
rendered substantial services as
i a self-employed person.
Q. My claim for Social Secur
} ity benefits for our children was
denied when my wife died. I was
told it was because my wife had
not worked for several years. Do
the recent improvements In the
law make any change? E.D.,
Griffin.
A. Yes! Under the old law, be
nefits could be paid to surviving
children of a woman worker only
if she had worked recently un
i der Social Security. Now', bene
fits may be paid to children
of a female worker if she has
enough work credits (earned at
any time) to be “fully insured.’’
