Social Security
Setup Secure,
Says McLaurin
Miss Kate McLaurin, officer in
charge of the Griffin area Social
Security office, spoke to the Ex
change Club of Griffin Tuesday
and told the story of Social Se
curity since its beginning, how
more and more people are now
covered, and how payroll taxes
on workers and employes have
financed the program. Addition
al people have been covered by
acts of Congress but these also
have paid taxes on their earn
ings and incomes.
She said the local office was
established to make it easier for
people to get information as to
their benefits, but also to weed
out claims that are not to be
valid.
Following her talk, she ans
wered questions from club mem
bers. One of these concerned the
solvency of the program. She
pointed out that Social Security
payments of those covered ran
in excess of the costs of opera
tion and payments of benefits
and said there was, in her opin
ion, no chance of any danger.
“Periodically, we see articles
in magazines, newspapers and
other media that picture a ‘bank
rupted’ Social Security setup. But
these are exaggerated, pessimis
tic ideas and there is little dan
ger,” she asserted.
Prior to her talk the club elec
ted six new directors, to serve
for 12 months. They wall take of
fice Jan. 1. They are: Barron
Cumming, Bob Rice, Bill Ram
sey, Homer Davis, Ray Barron,
and Lester Lutrell. These with
six holdover directors, P. A.
Bond, Dan Boyd, Mac Garrison,
Robert Langford, Gordon Mill
ing, Sr. and Gus Pelt will make
up the Board of Control for the
first six months of 1969.
Directors are elected for one
year terms and every six mon
ths holdover members retire and
six new directors are chosen to
fill the vacancies.
