Heisman Trophy Winner
One More Goal Line
For 0. J. To Cross
By VITO STELLINO
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPD— There’s
still one more goal line for O. J.
Simpson to cross before he
winds up his storied collegiate
football career.
Simpson, after being named
the winner of the Heisman
Trophy Tuesday as the out
standing college football player
of 1968, revealed that he still
has one major goal left to
achieve.
“I’ve never been on an
undefeated team and I’d like to
do that this year,” the Southern
California halfback said.
Simpson said San Francisco
City Junior College was beaten
once each season during his
two-year stay there and South
ern California lost one game—a
3-0 decision to Oregon State
last year although the Trojans
wound up with the No. 1 rating.
USC has gone through nine
straight games without a loss
this season and finishes its
regular season Saturday in a
nationally - televised game
against ninth - ranked Notre
Dame. The Trojans will then
play Ohio State in the Rose
Bowl on New Year's Day.
Simpson also feel the Tro
jans deserve their No. 1
standing in the UPI Board of
Coaches ratings although there
are others who feel that Ohio
State should be ranked No. 1.
"We were No. 1 last season
and we feel that until we’re
beaten, we still deserve to be
the No. 1 team,” Simpson said.
“We don’t care about how the
voting goes, unless we lose we
feel we’re the top club.”

Simpson was a runaway
choice in the balloting for the
Heisman Trophy after finishing
second last year to UCLA’s
Gary Beban, who had a superb
three-year mark.
Simpson received 855 first
place votes in the poll of 1,042
electors. Simpson had 128
seconds and 32 thirds for a total
of 2,853 points while Leroy
Keyes of Purdue was second
with 49 first place votes and a
total of 1,103 points. Notre
Dame’s Terry Hanratty, who
won't be able to play against
Simpson Saturday because of a
knee injury, was third with 22
first place votes and 387 points.
Simpson already has set a
single season rushing mark of
1.654 yards this season with one
game remaining. And his two

Irate Ex-Oiler
Threatens GM
With Pistol
By DARRELL MACK
HOUSTON (UPD—An irate
former Houston Oiler football
player, identified by police as
Charles Lockhart, threatened
Oiler general manager Don
Klosterman with a loaded pistol
Tuesday in an argument over
wages, but was subdued before
shots were fired.
Houston police said the 23-
career record of 3,371 yards set
by Art Luppino of Arizona in
four seasons.
Simpson is almost certain to
be the No. 1 pick in the draft by
the pros on Jan. 28. That pick
seems likely to go to the
Philadelphia Eagles and Simp
son made it obvious the is not
actually thrilled about the
prospect of playing for the
Eagles.
“I’d prefer to play in
California for an NFL team,”
said the native of San Francis
co. He meant either the Rams
or the Forty-Niners.
He said New York would be
his second choice after Califor
nia.
Simpson will receive the
Heisman Trophy at the Down
town Athletic Club’s 34th annual
dinner on Thursday, Dec. 5.
year-old Lockhart was later
charged with carrying a deadly
weapon and serious threat to
take a life. He was released on
bond of $1,600 late Tuesday.
Klosterman said Lockhart
pulled the pistol, cocked it and
pointed toward his face. Tom
Williams, a special Oiler scout,
then lunged at Lockhart shout
ing, “No, don’t do that,” and
fought the gun away from him.
“It looked like a cannon,”
Klosterman said later. “Tom
Williams moved rapidly. He’s
not only a great talent scout, he
saves general manager’s lives.
“The gun went down and up
over his head,” Klosterman
said. “Then Tom got the hand
behind his back and took the
gun away.”
Williams is a former track
coach at Grambling college.
Klosterman said Lockhart
was angry because he thought
the Oilers owed him money. He
said Lockhart was signed as a
free agent last summer and
underwit an operation for a
shoulder, injury he suffered in
camp.
