Tech Has Height
Whack Hyder Finally Has
Team He Can Look Up To
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — Georgia
Tech coach Whack Hyder final
ly has a basketball team he
can look up to.
Not that Hyder hasn’t had
some pretty good teams in his
17 years with the Yellow Jack
ets. But height has always been
a problem in the past and this
time, for the first time, all the

starters are at least as tall as
their 6-foot-3 coach.
“This is a young team, after
all, we lost four starters,” said
Hyder. “But, with our new
strength up front, it could be
better thorn last year when we
were 12 and 13. This bunch can
shoot and, making the big dif
ference, they’ll give us the
board strength we need to move
inside.”
Actually, all this hoped-for
new strength is based on the
expected stardom of Rich Yun
kus, a 6-foot-9*/ 2 sophomore
from Benton, 111., whom Hyder
thinks will be the best big man
Tech has had.
Hyder’s only concern is that
Yunkus, who averaged 25.4
points and 16.5 rebounds (both
19
records) with last year’s frosh,
is only 18 years old and may
be a year or two away from be
ing really great.
“But, we certainly couldn’t
hold him out a year, even if he
is younger than the usual sopho
more, because he’s better than
anyone else we’ve got and
would be a starter anywhere,”
Hyder said.
Hyder plans to run a 1-3-1 of
fense this winter with Yunkus
on one wing and 6-3 senior Ted
Tomasovich on the other; 6-7
junior Bob Seemer at the low
post; 6-3 sophomore Jim Thorne
at the point; and either junior
Rich Wright or sophomore Tom
my Wilson, both 6-7, at the high
post.
Seemer came on strong dur-
ing the second half of last seas
son, scoring 20 points or more
against Ohio State, Clemson and
Georgia. Tomasovich, who has
been a starter all along, aver
aged nearly 11 points per game.
Thorne is the younger brother
of Pete Thorne, one of the four
departing starters.
Hyder admits that Georgia
Tech won’t be as good on ball
control or pressing defense this
winter. The six men who gradu
ated all saw a lot of action, in
cluding Phil Wagner who aver
aged 19.6 ppg and was one of
the Jackets’ best all-around
players.
Georgia Tech got off to a fast
start last season but lost four
out of five while Wagner was
on the shelf and never fully re
covered.
Playing ability aside, the Yel
low Jackets have two points of
concern this season. They’ve
been having scheduling prob
lems ever since they left the
Southeastern Conference and
now they’re being forced to
share their coliseum with the
professional Atlanta Hawks —a
compact which figures to hurt
their already dwindling atten
dance.
While the teams which re
mained with the SEC are play
ing an 18-game round robin,
Georgia Tech has had to line
up teams like Tampa, Jackson
ville University, Mercer, Ha
waii, Furman and Virginia Mili
tary — unlikely drawing cards
all.
Tech does have North Caroli
na, Ohio State and Georgia
coming into Atlanta and plays
at Tennessee and Notre Dame
as well as in the Sun Bowl at
El Paso.
“Sure, a lack of experience
could hurt us at first,” said
Hyder. "But we’ve never had a
harder working group. If they
find themselves early enough,
they could make a good ac
counting this season.”
Georgia Tech opens its 25-
game season this Saturday
night at Clemson.
