Maddox Meets Press
Running Virginia
Not Idle Gossip
By MARCIE RASMUSSEN
ATLANTA (UPD—Gov Les
ter Maddox, angered by the
n :mber of robberies of Atlanta
bus drivers, says the city ought
to provide more policemen who
should if necessary “shoot down
these criminals.”
The governor made the re
mark Tuesday during a wide
ranging press conference in
which he also said it was “not
just idle gossip” that his wife,
Virginia, might run for govern
or in 1970.
“I would consider running
Virginia,” said Maddox, who is
unable to succeed himself under
Georgia law.
Expressing dismay at a deci
sion by the Atlanta Transit Sys
tem this week to cut down on
the number of robberies against
bus drivers by no longer allow
ing them to carry cash to make
change, the governor said it ex
emplified a breakdown of law
and order.
“This is a sad thing indeed
that in this city and government
people can’t get on a bus and
get change for their fare and
drivers are so threatened that
they’re afraid to drive,” Mad
dox declared.
Starting Dec. 1, bus riders
will have to have exact change
or a token to ride the buses, in
the past year there have been
more than 50 holdups Involving
drivers.
“This Is an indictment of our
government,” he added, saying
it showed a collapse of law and
order.
The governor suggested the
Maddox Play
Almost Set
For Broadway
ATLANTA (UPD— Plans for
taking “Red, White and Mad
dox” to Broadway are in the
final stages, with signing of a
contract expected within a
week, officials of Theatre Atlan
ta said.
The repertory theatre is mak
ing plans to move the entire
company, sets and costumes to
New York for production in mid
or late January, said director
Jay Broad.
Broadway producer Edward
Padula, among whose credits is
“Bye, Bye Birdie,” is contract
ing to bring the play, a musical
spoof on Georgia Gov. Lester
Maddox, to a theatre on the
strip.
“The final papers are not
signed,” Broad said. He said
arrangements were “about 97.8
per cent” complete. He estimat
ed the total cost of producing
the play on Broadway at
$200,000.
The theater is currently in a
court battle with the landlord of
the theater who claims the thea
ter owes her back rent. An in
junction against an eviction no
tice is now in effect.
Broad said, however, that
whatever the outcome of the
court hassle, the play would
still go on Broadway if a con
tract is signed.

Until now the city’s bus driv

Maddox said if his wife were
to run for governor and win, he
would “help her govern.
“I don’t want it to go back in
the same old rut,” he said re
ferring to the administration of
the state when his term of of
fice is up.
“I would like to see a continu

Asked if he would in effect

were to be governor, Maddox
replied, “No sir, I don’t run the
mansion now.”
