Bathrooms become conversation pieces in more homes. As new houses and apart
ments include two-, three- and four-bathroom enticements, men demand their
own. Here are installed, if space permits, exercycles, sun lamps, hi-fi and other
items, plus plumbing necessities. Even the latter take on new aspects. The bath
at left was designed by Sherle Wagner with red lizard walls, black marble
sunken tub (not shown), brushed chrome faucets and steel wall sculpture. Mean
while, stylists far from neglect women when it comes to bathroom designs and
color. Shown (right) is one pattern in a special line of Maxi towels, 44 inches
square. Japanese artist Hanae Mori translated her large-scale patterns for
towels by Martex into apres-bath or lounging outfits, such as culottes. There are
five Hanae Mori robes to match her towel designs and colors include orange,
dark pink, light violet or dark yellow. Model here poses with a new aqua bath
unit by American Standard.

No Scum on Yule Tree
By BETTY CANARY
Love, hope and charity—this is the sea
son for it. Os course, it may be a bit diffi
cult this year. We must face up to our
Mayor Daleys. Then, there are, just for
starters, starvation, disease and crime.
Or, if you really want to test your ability
to be charitable, there is always Eldridge
Cleaver.
Cleaver, for those who want to indulge
their capacity for tolerance, is high in the
ranks of the Black Panthers. He is, by his
own admission in his book, “Soul on Ice,”
a rapist. An ex-convict, he was a presiden
tial candidate who actually drew some
votes in November.
The Black Panthers, for those who still
have charitable inclinations, publish a
journal that, among other things, printed
a cartoon of Robert Kennedy after his as
sassination depicting him as a dead pig.
I know the mail will bring me curt little
notes saying, “Here it was the time of
holly berries and mellow feelings and you
are talking bitter words.” At least one
person will write that he opened his news-
Eaper hoping to find a bit of nostalgia and
e sure wishes I’d forget the ugly stuff.
I’ll answer those letters before I get
them. I am an eternal optimist. I’m the
kind who has a flat tire and says, “Well,
for awhile I got a new slant on life.” But,

while I am also a believer in Christmas
cheer, I do believe this is a time to sort out
our thoughts.
Personally, I am not one for hopeless
ness and despair. And, 1 am not going to
react to the turmoil in my country by curl
ing up in a damp little ball of fear.
As we have undergone a real revolution
in this past decade, we should have ex-
Eected that when good, honest changes
oiled up, some garbage would come tc
the surface. All I suggest is that we
recognize scum for what it is, and not be
afraid of being labeled "intolerant” when
we tell it as we see it.
Why do some keep trying to justify the
Black Panthers or, at the other extreme,
the American Nazi Party? Why do some
see them as bold heroes when they really
are loud-mouthed misfits?
As for understanding these rejects of so
ciety, well, we understand them all right.
They have complete contempt for every
body who will not join them in thumbing
noses at such sentimentalities as family
and home and citizenship.
And so, during this gentle season, I’ll
not debase myself. I’ll not be offering my
love to those who see life as an obscenity.
