Dr. Pat Trammell/
Ex-QB, Dies Os Cancer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPD—
Dr. Pat Trammell, the field
general of coach Paul "Bear”
Bryant’s first great Alabama
football teams, died of cancer
Tuesday. Burial was scheduled
today at Scottsboro, Ala.
The death of Trammell, 29,
came after a long fight with the
disease which first hospitalized
him in July and sent him to
New York for further treatment
before being hospitalized here
for the second time last week
end.
Upon hearing of Trammell’s
death Tuesday morning, Bryant
said he was "the most unself
ish person in the world.”
“I already had so much re
spect and admiration for him,
but being close to him during
most of his illness you just had
to recognize that he was some
thing super,” Bryant said.
Trammell was the first of the
great passing quarterbacks Bry
ant developed at Alabama. For
three seasons he quarterbacked
the team Into a national power
house.
At the bedside of the young
doctor when he died were his
wife, Clayton and his parents,
Dr. and Mrs. Edward Lee Tram
mel. Other survivors include two
children, Pat Jr., 6, and Julian
na, 3.
Trammell led Alabama in his
senior year to 11 straight vic
tories and the first of two na
tional championships under Bry
ant in 1961.
He passed for 1.035 yards that
season and rushed for 308 for
a total of 1,314. He threw only
three interceptions and estab
lished himself as fifth among

Alabama passers.
In 1959, as a sophomore,
Trammell quarterbacked Bry
ant’s first bowl team at Ala
bama. The Tide lost to Penn
State 7- oin the Liberty Bowl,
but finished the season with a
7-2-2 mark.
During his junior year, Ala
bama posted an 8-1-2 mark, in
cluding a 3-3 tie with Texas in
the Bluebonnet Bowl. From the
fourth game of his junior year
until the end of his college ca
reer, Alabama went undefeated.
In addition to the national
championship in 1961, Alabama
took a 10-3 victory over Arkan
sas in the Cotton Bowl.
For his part, Trammell was
named All-Southeastern Confer
ence quarterback and was made
a second team All - America
pick.

game and a 537 series Tuesday
in the Dundee League.
Mary Turner bowled a 193
game and a 507 series. Carolyn
Garmany rolled a 189 and a 506
series and Betty Parkinson had
a 179 and a 502 series.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (UPD—
Members of the Mississippi
State football team were watch
ing television Tuesday when
they heard a plea for blood for
an 8-year-old girl scheduled to
undergo open-heart surgery in
New Orleans.
Little Janice Marie Hutchen
son, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
W. O. Hutchenson of Macon,
Miss., needed about 24 pints of
blood for the Friday morning
operation. The players respond
ed by donating 35 pints.
The little girl has been un
able to participate in any kind
of vigorous activity since doc
tors discovered two holes in her
heart.
A fund-raising drive also has
been started in the Columbus
and Macon area to assist the
child. Her father is an SBS-a
--week foreman at the Macon
Brick and Tile Co.

be the new starting linebacker
for the Atlanta Falcons after a
pinched nerve forced Ralph
Heck out of the position Tues
day.
Brezina has been playing
back-up man to Heck, a six
year veteran from the Univer
sity of Colorado.
Heck has been starting line
backer since the Falcons be
came a National Football
League team three years ago.

who to call up from the taxi
