Maddox Tax Talks Drew Small Crowds
By MARCIE RASMUSSEN
MADISON, Ga. (UPD— Gov.
Lester Maddox, drawing some
of the smallest audiences since
becoming governor, has kicked
off an 18-city tour to promote
a tax hike with an appeal for
Georgians to “come help us.”
“Taxes and the budget are
problems which we must face
up to,” the governor told some
80 persons assembled in Wed
nesday night in a chilly Madi
sor school auditorium. “I ask
you to help us come up with
programs to guarantee that
Georgia will continue to be a
leader.”

series of tax-hike addresses of
the day, after talking to a crowd
of about 100 in the afternoon in
Augusta where he said increase
taxes now or “later pay the
price for lagging and drag
ging.”
The governor is trying to
raise support for a $211.5 mil
lion increase proposed by Dr.
James Papke, research director
of the State Tax Revision Com
mission, which would include
hikes in the state sales tax and
the gasoline tax, and a restruc
turing of the state income tax.
But the subject has not been
entirely popular with the vot
ers. “I’m afraid your subject
here tonight is not the most
popular,” said State Rep. Roy
Lambert, chiding the gover
nor’s turnout following his Ma
dison address Wednesday night.
“You drew a bigger audi°tice
at the ceremony to dedicate a
golf course than you have here
this evening,” he told Maddox,
following the governor’s speech.
Lambert said the tax propos
al would be given careful con
sideration by the legislature, al
though a number of powerful
legislators have spoken out in
opposition to any tax increases.
In the face of the stiff oppo
sition, Maddox decided to take
the state’s budget situation to
the people, dubbing his tour,
“You, the Truth and Georgia,"
and hoping to bring public
pressure to bear on anti - tax
lawmakers.
State Game and Fish Com
missioner George Bagby, who
joined the governor on the Ma
dison leg of his tour, urged the
shivering audience, “Go with
the governor this extra step
and keep his programs going.”
Earlier, Maddox told Augusta
residents, “I need your help
for continued security and pros
perity. We can pay now for
progress and prosperity for all
Georgians or later pay
the price for lagging and
dragging.”
