BETTY CANARY
A Rash of Cleanliness
By BETTY CANARY
I kept my appointment with the derma
tologist with some trepidation.
“Tell me, doctor,” I said. “Don’t spare
me.”
He examined my arms and hands care
fully.
“Is this the heartbreak of psoriasis?” I
asked.
“It’s surprising how many of my pa
tients ask that,” he said. “You’ve been
watching too much television.”
Was this, then, the result of sitting up
and watching all those old South Pacific
war movies on The Late Show? “You
mean it’s jungle rot?”
“I meant you’ve watched too many com
mercials.”
“Oh.”
“Your problem Is dry skin. You take too
many baths.”
“Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” I re
(minded.
He stopped writing prescriptions. “Are
you a Christian Scientist?”
“Finish the prescriptions," I said.
He did. I got them for two ointments,
one lotion, a bath oil and some pills. I also
got cautioned to wear rubber gloves while

lurking around the kitchen sink as well as
warnings about wrapping up when I step
outside the house.
He also cautioned me not to drink while
I was taking the pills. This was unneces
sary because I once had a cocktail two
hours after taking a prescribed medica
tion and 1 awakened in a hospital emer
gency room.
Being loaded down with five prescrip
tions merely because 1 have dry skin
seemed ridiculous and I told him so. How
ever, he informed me that each year his
waiting room holds more people with the
same complaint. He says we are victims
not only of too much bathing but of our
good furnaces and tight storm windows.
I first visited the dermatologist last
summer because a rash developed on my
arms, and the diagnosis was that I had be,
come photosensitized.
And, he tells me, people are now lining
up in his office because this sun poisoning
has become a common complaint. Mine
was caused apparently by overexposure to
the sun. However, various medications
can result in our becoming photosensi
tized. In this pill-taking age, it has be
come a real problem.
“All the price of civilized living,” my
doctor says. I know what he meant. Aftej
all, 1 paid his bill, didn’t I?

How to Freeze Eggs
If your recipe calls for
only part of an egg, the rest
can easily be frozen for later
use. To freeze whites, pour
into ice cube trays or muffin
tins till frozen, then transfer
to a plastic bag. Yolks will
coagulate, so you must add
either salt -teaspoon to
six yolks) or sugar (two tea
spoons to six yolks), accord
ing to use you might make:
of them later. Mix lightly,
but try not to mix in air;
Freeze in ice cube tray.
When using later, one yolk
equals one tablespoon and
one white equals 1% table
spoons. You can also mix the,
whole egg lightly before)
freezing.

FASHION TIPS
Fur Hats Are 'Headliners
Fur hats—white rabbit,
lynx, blond mink and light
ened lamb—are the “head
liners” for winter fashion
They’re fluffy, they’re warm—
but they get terribly dirty, and
who can spare them long
enough to have them dry
cleaned? The best way to keep
a fur hat clean and wearable
for every cold winter’s day is
to dry-clean it yourself with
baby powder. Just dust ab
sorbent baby powder on the
fur, then gently brush it out
with a soft brush. Out comes
the dirt, and your fluffy pro
tector is ready to wear.

Shop Discriminatingly
The teen-ager who sets out
on a shopping expedition can
sidestep the common pitfalls
it she heeds these hints: De
cide what you really need.
Weed out articles you haven’t
worn once in the past year.
Are you equipped for school,
rain, snow, sun, informal and
dress-up dates and special ac
tivities? Put first things first
and know what you’re looking
for when you shop. Build up
bargain resistance and don’t
buy out of desperation. Be a
discriminating shopper, take
your time, look around and
compare.

Start Day Right
Start your day with a'
happy attitude. Before you
hop out of bed, tell yourself
it’s going to be a great day.
Even if you feel draggy,
make yourself move fast and
you’ll come awake sooner.
You’ll be surprised. It really
works.
