NORTH VIETNAM
POPULATION: 19,000,000

The Geneva agreements of 1954
turned over 22 provinces of Vietnam
north of the 17th parallel to the Viet
Minh Communist guerrilla movement.
A plebiscite on reunification with the
south was supposed to take place in
1956 but was never held. U.S. air
attacks began in 1965 in retaliation
for North Vietnam’s aid to the Viet
Cong in South Vietnam.
BURMA
POPULATION: 25,246,000
AREA: 261,789 Square Miles

A British possession until 1947, Burma
is officially nonaligned and scrupul
ously neutral between East and West.
For years, special efforts were made
to remain on good terms with neigh
boring China but relations with Peking
have been cool since anti-Ch inese
riots in 1967.
LAOS
POPULATION: 3,000,000
AREA: 91,429 Square Miles

GOVERNMENT: Kingdom
Laos is officially neutral but the coali
tion government is boycotted by the
Pathet Lao Communists and sup
ported by the United States. Warfare
continues against Pathet Lao and
North Vietnamese troops holding the
eastern half of the country. The Ho
Chi Minh Trail supplying Viet Cong
forces in South Vietnam runs through
eastern Laos.
CAMBODIA
POPULATION: 6,250,000
AREA: 69,898 Square Miles

GOVERNMENT: Kingdom
Under unpredictable Chief of State
Prince Norodom Sihanouk, Cambodia
has tended to be neutral on the side
of the Communists. Relations with the
United States were broken in 1963.
The Ho Chi Minh Trail runs through
the northeast section of the country
and Viet Cong troops operate from
Cambodian territory.
THAILAND
POPULATION: 31,508,000
AREA: 200,148 Square Miles

GOVERNMENT: Kingdom
(Military Control)
Thailand is firmly allied with the
United States and has troops in South
Vietnam. Some 40,000 U.S. service
men, mostly Air Force, are stationed
in the country. U.S. planes bombing
North Vietnam operate from bases in
Thailand. Sattahip is a major U.S. air
and naval base. Communist guerrillas
are active in the northeast provinces.
MALAYSIA
POPULATION: 9,661,000
AREA: 128,430 Square Miles

GOVERNMENT: Elective Monarchy
Malaysia, a member of the British
Commonwealth, is a federation of the
Malayan Peninsula, south of Thailand,
and former British territories on the
island of Borneo. One-third of the
population is of Chinese descent.
Malaysia, founded in 1963, is aligned
with the West and receives military
aid from Britain and Australia.
SOUTH VIETNAM
POPULATION: 16,543,000
AREA: 65,948 Square Miles

Since 1954, Vietnam's 39 southern
provinces have been an independent
non-Communist state backed by the
United States. Viet Cong guerrilla
activity began in 1956. American
troops entered the war in 1965.
Korea, Australia. New Zealand, Thai
land and the Philippines also have
units in South Vietnam.
