Probe Sought In Jailing
Os CR Leader’s Daughters
SYLVESTER, Ga. (UPD — A
Negro congressman from Mich
igan has called for a federal
probe Into the six-day jailing of
two young daughters of a local
civil rights leader which led to
boycotts and closing of Worth
County’s three mostly-Negro
schools.
The school closing, in turn,
has brought to light a prevail
ing trend in South Georgia —
rejection of Health, Education
and Welfare Department direc
tives, with its threatened sanc
tions of withdrawal of school
funds.
School boards in five south
west Georgia counties have
opted, rather than to abandon
their “freedom of choice” inte
gration plans, to defy the fed
eral government and "wait and
see” what President-elect Rich
ard Nixon will do.
Rep. Charles C. Diggs Jr., D-
Mich., Thursday demanded in a
telegram to Atty. Gen. Ramsey
Clark that the Justice Depart
ment Investigate the arrests of
Dorothy Young, 14, and her
sister Yvonne, 11, in their class
room in Warwick, Ga. last
week.
Diggs asserted that the
daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Le-
Roy Young, among the first Ne
gro students enrolled in the
town't previously all-White pub
lic schools, were arrested by
Worth County sheriff’s deputies.
He said that the parents were
denied permission to see their
daughters and could not even
get any information about their
whereabouts for 24 hours while |
the girls were being held in the
Albany, Ga. jail.
Diggs said Dorothy was I

• Yvonne was charged with being
I unruly on a school bus.
E “The school board refused to
1 explain why disciplinary action
1 had not been taken rather than;
1 formal arrest,” Diggs said.
1 The superintendent of Worth ’
County schools, Mrs. Lizzie J. |
1 Deariso, said the boycotts and I
’ closing of three schools Thurs- 1
' day were an outgrowth of the '
1 arrest of the girls, but would 1
' not comment any further. She
' said she hoped the schools could ■
be reopened Monday.
Sheriff D.S. Hudson refused to .
answer any questions about the ‘
arrests, but referred them to
Tifton Superior Court Judge J. ’
Bowie Gray, who released the j 1
two girls to their parents’ cus-1
tody last Tuesday, six days I ’
after their arrest.
Gray could not be reached for ‘'
comment.
Diggs, who also wired HEW | 1
secretary Wilbur J. Cohen i
Thursday to “command and i ’
' support action by your depart-1 1
ment," said the girls were ar
rested Dec. 4.
On that same day, Wednes
day, parents protesting Worth 1
County’s desegregation plan, as '
submitted to HEW, met with
the school board. The plan sub- 1
mltted would have allowed for j
total integration by races, with I
segregation by sex, in the coun-1 ,
ty’s six schools.
"There was pressure all
around,” Miss Deariso said of
the plan’s withdrawal. “A group
of citizens met with us Wednes
! day, December fourth. Last Fri
| day, we withdraw the plan from j
I HEW.” .
"Nixon has promised freedom
lof choice,” one Sylvester rest-1
6
dent, R.M. Hurst, said at a
mass meeting of parents last
Tuesday. The meeting, accord
ing to J.R. Odom of Sylvester,
who called the meeting, was an
expression by parents — both
Negro and White —of their
preference for "freedom of
choice” plans.
“He (Nixon) said there was
going to be freedom of choice
on the county or state level,”
Odom said. "The Whites and
coloreds at this meeting just
got up and talked and neither
wanted any other kind.”
Sumter County schools have
lost federal funds for this term.
The school board refused to
adopt the federal guidelines for
accelerated desegregation.
Turner and Cook county
school officials have been called
in for HEW hearings to show
cause why their funds should
not be defered. Such action cur
rently is being awaited.
Tift County, which submitted
what was considered one of the
most progressive plans of the
15 south Georgia school systems
called on the carpet by HEW
last spring, has shelved further
implementation of its integra
tion plan. It, too, has decided
to “wait and see” if things will
be different after Jan. 20.
Maddox’s Tax
Plan Meets
Little Success
By MARCIE RASMUSSEN
ATLANTA (UPD — Gov.
Lester Maddox, whose proposal
to get $211.5 million in new
revenues out of the 1969 General
Assembly has met with little
success so far, plans to meet
with top legislative leaders to
discuss the plan.
Maddox, who was greeted by
a total of 200 persons in visits
to Augusta and Madison this
week, said Thursday he would
meet with the leaders. It would
probably be his only chance of
getting any portion of the tax
proposal through the legislature.
Maddox said he had not yet
drawn up a tax bill for the ses
sion, which opens Jan. 13, but
was holding off because he
wanted to talk to Speaker
George L. Smith and Lt. Gov.
George T. Smith.
He met with the two key men
Thursday in what was described
by the speaker as “a pprelimi
nary meeting.” Lt. Gov. Smith
i said only generalities were dis
cussed.
The tax plan proposed by
Maddox, who has scored little
success with the past two legis
latures, is given little chance of
passing in its entirety this ses
sion, but talks with both Smiths
could result in a compromise
version of the Maddox tax plan
being passed.
