Eddie Stanky Among
Washington Prospects
WASHINGTON (UPD—
Rookie Manager Jim Lemon is
out as manager of the
Washington Senators, and Bob
Kennedy, Sam Mele and possi
bly Eddie Stanky—three well
experienced ex-managers—are
the best bets to succeed him.
New owner Robert Short
cleaned house Wednesday by
firing both Lemon and General
Manager George Selkirk from
the team that finished last in
1968. He offered both jobs
elsewhere in the organization
but neither had decided whether
to accept.
“I’m not ashamed of anything
we did,” Lemon said at his
home In suburban University
Park, Md., “and I’m not a bit
discouraged. I think managing
is quite a challenge and I’d like
another shot in the future. I
want to stay in baseball as long
as I can."
Washington’s pitching and
hitting—except for big Frank
Howard—were inept the whole
1968 season. Howard had one of
his best seasons in the majors,
but he was about the only one
on the team who did.
Short, a Minneapolis business
man and treasurer of the
Democratic National Commit
tee, took over the club Tuesday.
Even while he was denying
reports that Lemon and Selkirk
had been fired, he admitted he
had talked to Kennedy, Mele
and Stanky.
A few hours later. Short fired
both Lemon and Selkirk.

Maravich’s Average
Dips To 44.2 Points
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPD — “Pistol
Pete’’ Maravich, still traveling
at a record 44.2 point pace de
spite being held to a season-low
21 points earlier this week, has
a golden opportunity to fatten
his scoring average this week
end.
Playing three games in four
days, Louisiana State is hosting
Pittsburgh on Friday, Mississip
pi on Saturday and Mississippi
State on Monday —none of
which have been impressive
this season.
In four games against the
two Mississippi teams last year,
Maravich, who wound up with
a record 43.8 average for his
sophomore season, averaged
44.5 ppg. “Pistol Pete” hasn’t
played against Pitt before but
ths Panthers’ 3-11 record does
not add up to a lot of defense.
Despite Maravich’s prolific
scoring, LSU (7-6) is in the
throes of a five-game losing
streak and desperately needs a
change if the Bengals, with

As things now stand, the sth

(13-2), two games ahead of the

The big game this weekend Is
up at Lexington, Ky., where the
Vanderbilt Commodores will try
to put the brakes on Kentucky’s

It is hard to figure how the
Wildcats can be blocked with
seven of their 11 remaining
games at home and the rest of
the league knocking each other
off.
There’s limited major college
action for Southeast teams be

LSU-Pitt, Georgia Tech will be

IN MEMORIAM
In memory of Airman James
A. Corley, who passed away
one year ago today, Jan. 30.
Just one year ago today, God
called and you went away.
To another home not far
from here,
But Jimmy your presence is
always near.
You came into our home, and
into our hearts, never
dreaming so soon we would
have to part.
Our hearts are heavy, and
our tears still flow,
We loved you Jim for that
you did know.
We remember your face and
wonderful smile and thank
God you were ours for a
little while.
So as the days go by and It
had to be,
You will always be a sweet
memory.
