The Griffin Woman’s Club has presented a check to
the Griffin Music'Club Scholarship Fund. The check
was presented by Mrs. Ed Y. Roberts (1), president
of the Griffin Woman’s Club, to Mrs. O. N. Mathis
of the Griffin Music Club. The Music Club presents
a scholarship to an outstanding student in the field of
music each year.

Mr. Goodman
Os Woolsey Dies
Mr. Hershel Lewis “Coot’*
Goodman, 50, of Woolsey, died
Tuesday night at the Georgia
Baptist Hospital in Atlanta where
he had been a patient for a
week.
Mr. Goodman was a lifelong
resident of Fayette County, son
of the late John I. Goodman and
Mrs. Irene Rowland Goodman.
He was employed at Southern
States Equipment Co., in Hamp
ton. Mr. Goodman was a mem
ber and deacon of the Woolsey
Baptist Church and a member
of the Woolsey Lodge of Masons.
He served in the U. S. Navy dur
ing World War Two.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Emily Chapman Goodman;
one daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Schell
of Conley; his mother, Mrs. John
J. Goodman of Fayetteville: five
brothers, Dorsey Goodman of
Sunny Side, Carol Goodman of
Griffin, Johnny Goodman, Rol
and Goodman and Jack Good
man, all of Fayetteville; four
sisters, Mrs. John Eubanks, Mrs.
Marvin Perry, Mrs. Sandy Cr
ews and Mrs. Doris Ketchum,
all of Fayetteville.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Thursday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock from the Woolsey
Baptist Church. The Rev. Eddie
Gilstrap and the Rev. Lane
Patrick will officiate and burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Goodman’s body will remain
at Haisten Funeral Home In Gr
iffin until carried to the church
to lie in state 30 minutes prior
to the funeral hour.
Fire Department
Reports T wo Alarms
The Griffin Fire Department
reported answering two al
arms on Tuesday afternoon.
Firemen were called at 1:21 p.
m. to extinguish an automobile
fire at 1208 West Taylor street.
Owner of the 1959 Chevrolet was
William Gill. Cause of the fir e
was undetermined and damage
was reported heavy to the wir
ing and motor.
At 1:34 p.m. an alarm was an
swered to the corner of South
Ninth and Oak streets, to a coin
operated laundry, operated by
Lewis Horton. Firemen report
ed slight damage to the building
and cause of the fire was unde
termined.
Shooting Death
Charge Changed
To Manslaughter
A murder charge against a
Fayette County farmer in the
shooting death of a Spalding Co
unty man has been reduced to
manslaughter and bond set.
Hugh Horton of Fayette Coun
ty was arrested Sunday night
and charged with murder in a
warrant taken by the father of
Sammy Roy Davis of Route One,
Griffin, who died of a gunshot
wound to the back of his head.
The charge against Horton was
reduced at a commitment hear
ing before a justice of the peace
Monday afternoon. Bond was
set at SI,OOO. Horton posted the
bond and was released from
Fayette County jail.
Davis was struck by a bullet
while driving his car in Fayette
County near Flint River. The
bullet pierced the rear window of
the car and struck Davis in the
back of the head. He was dead
on arrival at the Griffin-Spald
ing County Hospital.
Davis and Roger Vaughn of
Vaughn, Ga., had been to Fay
ette County to try out some
shotguns. They had gotten into
Davis’ car to leave when the
bullet struck Davis,

Mrs. Griggers
Mrs. Griggers
Ends 44 Years
With Dundee
Mrs. Willie Hines Griggers
has retired from Dundee Mills,
Inc. after 44 years of employ
ment.
Mrs. Griggers was born in Co
weta County and moved to Grif
fin in 1922. She joined the Dun
dee organization in 1925 as a tr
ainee in the spinning department
and worked as a spinner until
her retirement from No. 5 Mill.
For the past 30 yeEirs, Mrs.
Griggers has been an active
member of the East Griffin Con
gregational Holiness Church.
She has served five years as a
teacher in the Sunday School and
is currently serving as secre
tary of the Ladies Bible Class.
Mrs. Griggers is a widow and
is the mother of two children, a
daughter, Mrs. Hazel Bunn, and
a son, R. W. Griggers, both of
Griffin. She has four grandchil
dren and one great-grandchild.

Jackson Dies
Mr. Harvey Lee O’Neal, 68, of
Route two, Jackson, Pepperton
community, was dead on arrival
at the Sylvan Grove Hospital in
Jackson after suffering an ap
parent heart seizure late Tues
day night. >
Mr. O’Neal was employed for
35 years at Pepperton Mills
when be retired. He was a mem
ber of the Cedar Rock Congre
gational Methodist Church.
Mr. O’Neal is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Louise Boyd O’Neal;
three daughters, Mrs. Harold
Bell of Hapeville, Mrs. Victor
Nolan and Mrs. Sylvia Gilbert,
both of Jackson; three sons, Rus
sell O’Neal of Jackson, Terry
O’Neal of Decatur and Dennis
O’Neal of Griffin; four sisters,
Mrs. Grady Singley of Corbin,
Ky., Mrs. Vassis Lambert, Mrs.
Asa Wilkerson and Mrs. Wilm
er Knowles, all of Atlanta; two
brothers, Esker O’Neal of Mor
row and Wallace O’Neal of At
lanta; seven grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o’clo
ck from the Pepperton Baptist
Church. The Rev. James Brown
and the Rev. Frank Smith will
officiate. Burial will be in Cedar
Rock cemetery in Butts County.
Haisten Funeral Home of Jack
son is in charge of plans.

Griffin Police are investigat
ing a burglary that occurred
Tuesday night or early today
at Kelsey Junior High School.
Officers said a table model ra
dio was taken from one of sev
eral offices that were broken in
to.
The burglars entered the build
ing through a door on the west
side.
The officers said there were
no signs of vandalism.
Auto Strikes
Boy On Bike
A Griffin boy suffered minor
injuries Tuesday when the bicy
cle he was riding was struck by
a car on Bell street.
Terry William Davis, 13, of 510
Bell street, was treated at the
Griffin-Spalding County Hospi
tal for bruises to his left knee.
Driver of the car was listed
as Barney Clarence Greenway,
62, of 548 Bell street. Damage to
the car was estimated at $6.

—Hospital officials said Monday
that Lee MacPhail, the 51-year
old general manager of the New
York Yankees, was “doing
nicely” in his recovery from a
minor heart attack suffered
Sunday night.

MOONSHINERS BUSY
WARSAW (UPI) — Alcohol
consumption rose last year by
eight per cent and a Polish
newspaper said today much of
it was moonshine. The paper,
Gols Pracy, said police seized
30 illegal stills in Warsaw in
1968, almost twice as many as
the year before.
